Clos Figueras winery: in the heart of Priorat
The winery belongs to Christopher Cannan, president of Bordeaux-based Europvin, an importing company and wine merchant that has taken a strong position in Priorat by adding such names as Clos Mogador, Clos Martinet, Laurona to an already enviable portfolio of Spanish wines.
Where finest wines come from
Cannan decided to purchase the Priorat estate of Clos Figueras in 1997 on the advice of René Barbier of Clos Mogador. The production of the winery comes from 18 hectares of the soil that typifies the area – llicorella – and is located in the centre of the municipal boundaries of Gratallops. Some of the vines are the original Carignan (Carinyena) variety, with very old Grenache (Garnatxa), whilst new varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin blanc have also been introduced. Located on the schistous slopes of Gratallops, a terroir responsible for the finest wines of Priorat, the vineyards are tended by the famous René Barbier’s team, which also looks after the vinification and the ageing of the wines.
Enjoy a great stay in the restaurant at site
Today, Christopher and his wife Charlotte are continuing their hard work in crafting world-class wines that are enjoyed worldwide. Their first wine, Clos Figueras, is a superb example of old-vine Grenache and Carignan producing wines of depth, weight, and every other dimension. And then there is the stunning white – Font de la Figuera – which is a rare find in this red dominated part of Spain. A fascinating blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Chenin Blanc, the wine has become a benchmark for white Priorat and has great style and intensity.
And if this wasn’t enough, Clos Figueras has a superb restaurant, makes sublime olive oil on their winery
