Monemvasia Winery: Reviving Malvasia at Its Birthplace

Founded in 1997 by G. Tsibidis in the historic region of Monemvasia, Tsimbidi Winery is dedicated to the revival of Malvasia wine. This initiative is part of a broader vision that encompasses historical research, vineyard selection, winemaking, bottling, distribution, marketing, and trade. The winery aims to honor the rich heritage of Malvasia while producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.

A Modern Winery with a Rich Tradition

Building on the region's unique winemaking tradition, Monemvasia Winery has established a modern facility that processes grapes sourced from the surrounding area. The winery combines traditional knowledge with contemporary techniques to create exceptional wines. The vine and wine have been integral to the cultural, social, and economic life of Monemvasia, intertwined with local customs and celebrations.

Key Grapes and Vineyards

Spanning over 300 hectares, the vineyards are planted with indigenous grape varieties. The primary grapes cultivated at Monemvasia Winery include Kydonitsa, Monemvasia, Assyrtiko, Asproudi, Agiorgitiko, Mavroudi, and Limniona. These carefully selected grapes are used to produce distinctive red, white, rosé, and dessert wines. Recognized as one of the top wineries in the Peloponnese, Monemvasia has received numerous international awards for its exceptional quality.

We popped by on our way from Gythio to Monemvasia without a booking, and Barbara kindly gave us an informative and interesting tour and wine tasting. We loved seeing the cellar and behind the scenes of the whole wine making process. All the wines we tried were fantastic, and picked up a couple of bottles to enjoy for the rest of our Peloponnese trip. Highly recommend! Reservations can be made on their website.

Very nice tour in English... A bit too fast at first (my English isn't the best). We really enjoyed the tasting. The only criticism was that there was no visibility or tour of the vineyards.

We booked a visit in advance and had a fantastic time during wine tour and tasting. Monemvasia Winery is based in new location (they moved to a new place). Facilities are modern and good-looking. Our guide Dora was super-friendly and knowledgeable and we genuinely did not want to leave! She took us for a walk around the property and we had a chance to look at the staff labelling wines and also visit gorgeous cellar while listening about the history of the winery with some fascinating facts about Monemvasia-Malvasia and other Greek wines. All wines we tried were simply delicious, accompanied with local produce. We wanted to buy all bottles. Fantastic place for wine lovers, do not miss it when you're around.

Astonishingly accommodating, friendly, and fun. We messed up the booking on our end and the delightful tasting guide squeezed us in on less than 30 minutes' notice. The winery is equal parts charming and chic, the tasting itself is generously priced. Visit this place if at all possible.

Excellent tour, wines one better than the other and they went above and beyond to make my partner's birthday special. To get there you need a taxi but it's worth it, I highly recommend it. Thank you! Malvasia wonderful ❤️

An excellent winery with great wines and modern facilities. Its friendly staff helped us to get to know the winery and its wines better through the tour and tasting. In conclusion, I would like to say that it was one of the best tastings I have ever done as each new wine I tried was better than the previous one
