Traditional and Pride

The AOC Fitou is located in the southern extension of that of Corbières. Between Narbonne and Perpignan. The vineyards are divided into two distinct areas: one at the edge of the pond Leucate and Fitou, on small hills overlooking the castle of the same name. The other in the hinterland, in the middle of the Corbières around the basin of Tuchan-Paziols and the town of Villeneuve des Corbières, is 20 kilometers from the first zone, in Languedoc-Roussillon wine area, Southern France.

Shaly and Argilocalcareous Soils

This appellation covers an aggregate area of 26 square kilometers and produces around 9,300,000 liters of wines each year, averagely. The two implantation sectors are so far apart that they do not benefit from the same climatic conditions. The first has a Mediterranean climate with, on the coast, a low rainfall partially offset by the humidity of the air due to the proximity of the sea. The vineyards located in the hinterland are isolated from the sea by a rocky barrier, therefore drier. The tramontane sweeps the soils composed alternately of clay, limestone, and shale by cleaning up the vineyards.

Roussillon’s Most Distinctive Wines

The grape variety of this AOC is centered around Carignan (also called hardwood), and Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre can be used in addition. The blend of these grape varieties and the specific terroirs characterize the AOC Fitou by rugged and wild wines. The vinification is carried out traditionally and followed by aging in oak barrels that can last several years. These wines have scents of spices, scrubland, ripe or candied fruits on a background of wilder notes of venison or leather, especially if breeding is long.
