Where is the Vouvray located?

The Vouvray appellation is located in the Loire Valley region in Touraine, France, just a few kilometers from the city of Tours. The wine-growing area of Loire Valley stretches around 88 hectares and is well-known for its variety of wine appellations. Even though Vouvray is the most prestigious, some neighboring appellations are still worth mentioning, such as Montlouis, Anjou, Côteaux du Layon, and Savennières. These regions also produce white wine, mainly from the Chenin Blanc grape variety, similar to Vouvray wines. However, the winemaking techniques and flavors differ.

History of Vouvray wine appellation

Vouvray is one of France's earliest official appellation titles, producing wine in its beautiful vineyards since the Middle Ages. According to annals, Saint-Marti, a founder of iconic Marmoutier Abbey in the same region, has initiated the establishment and further development of the vineyards. Also, historical facts claim that the Chenin grape originates from the Anjoux wine region in the 9th century and ultimately migrated to Vouvray. On the literature level, Balzac chose this light, spring green-tinted wine as the setting for his novel, 'L'Illustre Godissart' ("The Illustrious Godissart").

Since then, wine cellars have been built in caves, ensuring coldness. Precisely this cold temperature was an adequate condition for producing sparkling wine, which was a pure innovation back in the 18th century, to which Vouvray owes a substantial part of its fame. In 1936 Vouvray earned a status as an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC).

Type of Vouvray Terroir

The fair proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, of around 200 kilometres, stipulates the maritime influence on the Vouvray wine region's climate, which is mainly continental. However, the versatile topography creates variations in microclimates. The Vouvray wine appellation is situated on a plateau above the river bank, from where the warm streams, affecting the flow of the land, create favourable conditions for noble rot. Generally, a warmer climate aids in shifting the production towards sweeter styles of wine, which is essential in producing both semi-sweet and dessert wines, used extensively in the wine trade. In comparison, cooler weather induces the production of sparkling and drier wine.

Soil is another critical part of terroir for creating propitious conditions to produce quality wine. The soil here consists primarily of tuffeau, clay, and gravel. Tuffeau is limestone that maintains an excellent balance of drainage and water retention, saving vines from waterlogging and drought. All those components determine the diversity and unique taste of Vouvray wine grapes.

Vouvray wine characteristics

Vouvray wine appellation produces only white wine, almost entirely from the Chenin blanc grape variety, and rarely uses a very small percentage of Arbois and Gamay grape varieties. However, the region offers a highly diverse selection of wine types in texture and taste. Chenin blanc grape is of high acidity and, therefore, malleable to produce different styles of wine and adjust to any level of sweetness. Indeed, there is an extensive choice of Vouvray wine styles and tasting notes. The tasting notes may vary among pear, honeysuckle, quince, ginger, fig, persimmon, green or yellow apple, and floral aromas, depending on the type and sweetness of the wine. Likewise, wines vary in color, ranging from medium-straw to deep gold.

Sparkling wines

Sparling wine is nowadays prevalent among Vouvray wines, and there is also a little distinction according to the producing method. The major part is produced with the same winemaking method as Champagne (Method traditionelle or mousseux as the French say). On rare occasions, the wine is labelled as pétillant, which is only slightly bubbly and made with the ancient method. Either one can be brut, meaning dry in French, or demi-sec, meaning sweet.

Still wines

As for still wines, they represent around 40% of Vouvray wines, and they can massively vary in sweetness and, therefore, in taste. Here is the list of still wine styles:

  • Sec meaning dry, with the residual sugar ratio of less than 8g/l
  • Tendre or tendre sec meaning off-dry or tender dry, which has a tint of sweetness reflected in fruity notes
  • Demi-sec, meaning sweet, is a moderately sweet wine with demonstrated flavours of fruit
  • Moelleux, meaning very sweet or a dessert-style wine with the taste of candied fruits

Ageing potential is another virtue of Vouvray wines. The longevity of some Vouvray wines is remarkably long-lasting. It can range from 4-5 years to decades if stored in the right conditions, thanks to the high acidity level of Vouvray Chenin blanc, which acts as a preservative and allows the wine to maintain its unique taste for longer.
