Canelones Wine Region - The Home of Uruguayan Wines

Canelones wine region is located northeast of the capital of Uruguay and accounts for almost 60% of the wine production of the country. Viticulture in the Canelones wine region was brought to the region by immigrants from Europe in the 1870s and by the end of the 19th century, the Canelones wine region was already producing its own excellent and well-respected wines.

The wines produced in the Canelones wine region are made mainly by local winemaking families that have occupied the region for generations. For this reason, the Canelones wine region is considered the epicentre of modern winemaking in Uruguay and the country’s most important wine region.

The proximity of the Canelones wine region to the Atlantic Ocean means that it has gentle temperature fluctuations between seasons and a long growing season. The coastal wines provide an excellent ventilating effect on the Canelones wine region preventing the vines from rotting. Across the Canelones wine region, there is a wide range of soils that are mostly rich and dense.

The Historical Wine of Canelones Wine Region - The Cabernet Sauvignon from Canelones - has a wonderfully intense ruby red colour with soft aromas. This wine has a balanced and elegant palate with flavours of pepper, green paprika and notes of vanilla and toasted smokiness.

Explore History at the Spikerman Museuem

The Spikerman Museum is the perfect place to learn about the history of the Canelones wine region. The museum has wonderful gardens for relaxing and a restaurant offering a variety of cuisine options. The renovated museum was reopened in 2016 and the focus is to invite the local community and visitors to its doors to appreciate the local cultural heritage. The collections of the museum tell the story of the history of Canelones and its role in the revolution. Most of the collections have been donated to the museum and the museum building is one of the oldest in the city.

Dishes to try in Canelones Wine Region

The cuisine of the Canelones wine region is strongly influenced by the region’s history of immigrants. The vibrant mix of cultures, tastes and flavours make it a wonderful gastronomy destination and the perfect place to enjoy the Uruguayan food and wine scene.

Asado - Roasted and Grilled Meats

Asado refers to roasted and grilled meat that is normally beef. The meat is cooked in a brick-built grill on either a wood or charcoal fire. The Asado begins by lighting charcoal made of native trees. The meat is placed on a tray and served immediately but can also be kept on a meat-warming plate. When cooked the meats are generally served accompanied by a salad.

Chivito - Traditional Uruguayan Sandwiches

A chivito is a local sandwich and the national dish of Uruguay. The sandwich is made with slices of grilled and roasted meats, tomatoes, lettuce, melted cheese and a fried egg.

Chaja - Uruguayan Sponge Cake

Chaja is a traditional Uruguayan cake that is made of layers of sponge cake, whipped cream, meringue and peaches. The cake is a staple at Uruguayan events, celebrations and festivities.
