The Wonderful Wines of Dobrogrea Romania

The Dobrogea wine region is one of the most popular in Romania, thanks to the fact that it is home to the Danube Delta. This river delta is 2 200 square miles wide and is a designated wildlife reserve. Along with the reserve, the Dobrogea wine region is also home to the ancient port city of Constanta and various other seaside resorts dotted across the 152-mile Black Sea Coast. For visitors to Dobrogea Romania, there are a number of day cruises through the waterways of the delta that allow one to see the wildlife of the region, traditional fishing villages, floating reed islands and sand dunes.

When visiting the Dobrogea wine region, one should be sure to spend time in Constanta and experience the local museums, historical monuments and the local grand casino.

The Dobrogea wine region enjoys an extraordinary 300 days of sunshine a year which makes it perfect for viticulture. The climate of the Dobrogea wine region is warm and moderated by the cool coastal breezes of the Black Sea. The soils of the Dobrogea wine region consist of volcanic, shale, limestone and gravel soils.

Wines From the 14th Century

Dobrogea wine region is a Romanian wine region that is widely known for its long history of winemaking. The Babeasca Neagra variety dates back to the 14th century and has now become internationally recognized. The berries of this varietal of sparse and are dark blue and purple in colour. The wines that are made from these grapes are light and flavoursome with a high level of acidity. The flavour has hints of bitter morello, dried plums, peony, violet, and iris.

Experience the Ancient City of Histria

The ancient city of Histria is located 65 km away from Constanta and is Romania’s oldest town. The town was founded by Greek colonists in 657 BC and is today an exhibition that is divided into a standard museum and an outdoor walk through the remains of the ancient city. One of the sections of the city is known as the sacred zone as this is where archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a Greek temple that was built in the 6th century BC. To get to Histria, jump on a bus in Constanta for a short ride to this ancient destination.

The Ruins of the Ancient City of Tomis

Within the Victoria Archaeological Park of Dobrogea wine region, one will find the ruins of Tomis which was a city founded by Greek settlers. When visiting the ruins one can see a tower that was reconstructed by the Byzantine emperor Justinian as well as the Roman wall and beautiful pottery collections.

The Basarabi-Murfatlar Cave Complex

The Basarabi-Murfatlar Cave Complex is an ancient cave church complex in the Dobrogea wine region. It is here that the rock churches of Murflatlar are carved into a chalk hill and were discovered in 1957. The excavation of the churches uncovered a complex of cells, dwellings, 4 small and 2 large churches as well as tombs and crypts all dating from the 9th century.

Archaeological Museum in Mangalia - Channel Your Inner Archaeologist

The Callatis Archaeological Museum is located in Manglia, Dobrogea wine region. This institution is where one can view the historic remains of the old Callis stronghold. The museum was first opened in 1959 and is home to a number of artefacts of archaeological significance from the Neolithic, Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods. The museum is open daily from 08:30 and closes at 16:30.

Mamaia - Romania’s Most Popular Resort

Mamaia is located northeast of Constanta and is considered to be Romania’s most popular resort. The resort is especially popular during the summer and lies on a strip of land between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol. Along the strip are a range of hotels and other tourism facilities.

Eforie Nord and Lake Techirghiol - Beautiful Romanian Seaside Resorts

Eforie Nord and Lake Techirghiol are health resorts that were opened in Dorogea in 1894. The treatments at the health resort are done using the mud from Lake Techirghiol which is said to have health and healing properties.

The Delicacies of Dobrogea Wine Region

As a result of its coastal location, the local food of the Dobrogea wine region relies heavily on fresh seafood. Elsewhere across the Danube delta, the local cuisine is characterized by the use of local sheep, milk and mutton – much like Middle Eastern Dishes. The foods of the region are wide and varied and provide something to satisfy everyone.

Ciorba de Peste - Traditional Romanian Soup

Ciorba de Peste is a fish soup that is typically found across the Danube Delta. The soup is made with a combination of fish stock, fresh fish, vegetables and herbs and is best enjoyed hot. This dish is unique as the fish chunks are eaten separately as a first course before the rest of the soup is enjoyed.
