Azienda Agricola Zaccagnini: A Legacy of Quality Winemaking

Azienda Agricola Zaccagnini is a family-owned winery founded by Mario Zaccagnini in 1969. Initially, he planted a few hectares of Verdicchio to produce wine for his family, while his primary business was in electrical systems.

With the exceptional quality of wines from the Salmagina vineyard and the region's ideal conditions for viticulture, Mario decided to sell his electrical company and dedicate himself fully to winemaking.

The winery is nestled in a picturesque landscape reminiscent of Tuscany, surrounded by rolling hills, mountains, olive groves, and vineyards. A unique saltwater spring is located nearby, where locals historically boiled the water to harvest salt.

Artisan Winemaking at Azienda Agricola Zaccagnini

The wines from Azienda Agricola Zaccagnini are known for their rich aromas, vibrant flavors, and distinctive textures. The winemakers prioritize organic practices, ensuring minimal intervention during the winemaking process. They avoid chemical fertilizers and pesticides, focusing on sustainable farming methods. As a result, the sulfite levels in their wines are well below regulatory limits, and they will achieve organic certification starting with the 2020 harvest.

Grape Varieties and Wine Selection

The winery cultivates a variety of grapes, including Verdicchio, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Pecorino, Passerina, and Montepulciano. These grapes are used to create a diverse range of wines, including red, white, rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines. Additionally, they grow wild plums and cherries for their dessert wines and produce high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

I'm here for work, I take care of the export of this winery which offers an extraordinary selection of excellent Verdicchios. The farmhouse of the "Segnavento" winery is also an excellent stop, with breathtaking views just a stone's throw from the sea

Last week while visiting Jesi, I took the time to explore local wineries. I'm pleased that I did. The real standout amond the several I visited was Zaccagnini. I drove out from Jesi on a blustery day through sleet and rain--not an ideal wine tour day. When I arrived at the winery, only an employee was there; but he called the owners and they soon arrived. I was then treated to a thorough tasting by (I believe) Lidia Zaccagnini. Wonderful verdiccios, of course, but also full-bodied red like Boezio, named after the Zaccagnini winemaker that brought his skills from Udine in the north to Le Marche. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful estate; but do try for warmer weather to fully enjoy the surroundings.

As a Friulian, finding a Friulian in the cellar in the Marche was a pleasant surprise. The Verdicchio wine and especially the Salmagina were a pleasant surprise: very good whites! Courteous and kind owner. We will definitely be back!
