Four Centuries of Winemaking Heritage

Château Coutet, perched on the scenic Saint-Martin de Mazerat plateau, has a storied history that spans 400 years. From this picturesque location, visitors can admire stunning views of the Entre-Deux-Mers hills and the Fronsac hillock. The estate covers 16 hectares and cultivates renowned grape varieties such as Merlot, Bouchet (Cabernet Franc), Cabernet Sauvignon, and Prayssac (Malbec). Today, the Beaulieu family, now in its 14th generation, continues this legacy. Alain, the manager and winemaker, works alongside his brother Xavier, nephew Adrien, and son Matthieu to uphold the winery's traditions.

Dedicated to Sustainable Practices

At Château Coutet, sustainability is at the heart of winemaking. The vineyard thrives without the use of herbicides or pesticides, and all vineyard work is performed by hand. This commitment to natural practices fosters a rich biotope and diverse flora, promoting sustainable agriculture. Organic compost is regularly applied to enhance soil health and ensure the vitality of the vineyard.

Highly recommended!! We visited the winery, our guide was Aignes, who also gave us the tour in Spanish, and we loved it! A small, family-run winery, you can see the enthusiasm with which they prepare the entire winemaking process, which by the way is delicious!

One of the best visits I’ve ever done. This is an incredible property filled with history, passion, and care. I loved learning about their production and their respect for the ancestral land where they make some beautiful wines. Agnes is an amazing guide!

We had a wonderful experience visiting Coutet! Our guide was very knowledgable, engaging, and truly passionate. We have been on many wine tours/tastings before but this is one that will stay with us. We would highly recommend. The walk from Saint Emilion to the vineyard through other vineyards is an added bonus!

A highly recommended experience. It is a unique, family-run winery with a lot to offer. Our reservation was cancelled but we hadn't realised, but they still found a way to show us the area in a very pleasant way. A very nice family and place. Thank you very much!!

Chateau Coutet was our second stop in Saint-Emilion, and it did not disappoint. Our guide, Agnes (please forgive me if I’ve misspelled her name), was warm and knowledgeable, with a genuine passion for wine that was immediately apparent. Her global experience in the wine industry has given her a unique perspective on winemaking, which she eagerly shared with us during the tour. As Agnes explained, Chateau Coutet is deeply committed to organic and natural winemaking. The estate strives for ecological balance in every aspect of its production. For example, they plant trees to protect against insects and birds, and they allow their fields to remain wild with minimal soil disturbance, only turning the soil when absolutely necessary. One interesting fact about Chateau Coutet is that they own the oldest bottle of wine in Bordeaux. Discovered buried on the property, it features a glass cork that is hermetically sealed, and although it may still be drinkable, the winery has vowed never to open it. However, they have recreated the bottle with a glass cap, and visitors can purchase this replica at the winery. Now, I know some of you might be skeptical about “natural” or “organic” wines, worrying they might be prone to spoilage or other issues. While the risk of spoilage can increase with more natural methods, I’m happy to say that Chateau Coutet manages these risks exceptionally well. Their wines were fantastic—fruit-forward with a subtle touch of oak. Our favorite was the Les Demoiselles, which is made entirely without electricity. If you're in Saint-Emilion, Chateau Coutet is a must-visit. It's a wonderful introduction to a family-run winery that treats its terroir with deep respect and reverence. This boutique winery is definitely worth the stop!
