Exploring Central Serbia

This private wine tour takes you to one of the most famous wine regions in Serbia. Šumadija region (pronounced [ʃumǎdija]), owes its name to the fact that the whole area was covered with thick forest (forest=šuma in Serbian) until the XIX century. In more recent history, wine making was connected to royal family Karađorđević who owned and cultivated 50 hectares of vineyards in the first half of the XX century. Their wine cellar was one of the most advanced wine productions in Europe of the time.

After #YourSerbiaHost picks you up at your hotel in Belgrade you’ll head for first wine stop is village Vlaški Do and winery Despotika. This recently established winery with ambitious plans and enthusiastic owner makes two wines from indigenous Serbian grape varieties. Those are Morava (white) and Prokupac (red). Only few winemakers in Serbia grow Morava, so you’ll have unique opportunity to try this white wine sort. Of course we won’t stop only with these two, there are many Despotika’s wines to taste.

From village Vlaški do we move on to another rural area. Next stop is winery which is perfect example of family wine making. Here you’ll have lunch with wine tasting and opportunity to hear a story from family members why they chose to be winemakers.

Following this wine route you’ll reach the capital of Šumadija wine region, Topola. On the slopes of Oplenac hill royal family Karađorđević nurtured their vineyards, from which they produced famous Trijumf (Triumph) wine. Royal wine cellars nowadays are state owned and they grow grapes on 11 hectares only. The highlight of King’s winery is the original king’s wine cellar which is in excellent condition, so you’ll have the opportunity to see how king made his wine some 85 year ago. The biggest treasure of Royal cellar is the old archive where they keep wines from 1930s. You’ll only get to try modern wines, not those from 1930s.

Final stop is one of the most prominent Serbian wineries from 1990s onward. Aleksandrović winery is a modern, yet very traditional establishment which produces only high quality wines. There is an interesting story related to their most famous Trijumf (Triumph) label and how Aleksandrović continued the tradition of making this wine. You’ll hear this one while you are sipping your own Trijumf. Nowadays Aleksandrović produces sixteen different wines, but they are best known for their Trijumf range, including sparkling wines.

After this winery the private wine tour ends and you are taken back to your hotel in Belgrade.
