Where is Colli di Faenza Wine Region

Colli di Faenza is in Emilia-Romagna wine region of northern Italy. The majority of the vineyards are found around the cities of Brissighella, Carola Valsenio, Riolo Terme, and parts of Faenza in the province of Ravenna, or Modigliani and parts of Tredozio in Forli Province.

History of Colli di Faenza

Faenza is an attractive, historic city with lots of art and architecture that make it one of the premier tourist spots in Europe. It's known for its pottery, which attracts visitors from all over. "Faience" is a word that has many meanings in different European languages, including French, English, and Danish. It's most commonly used to refer to pottery because it derives from the French word 'pâte de faîn'. Wine has been made in the Colli di Faenza DOC and around Faenza for centuries. But back then, it was just every day wine and didn't have any personality. In the late 70’s, foreign wine producers came to the area but were mainly intereted in its beauty. However, fortunately these wine producers managed to bring in their new grape varieties and techniques very quickly, which lead to a series of highly acclaimed wines. Most Italian wines come from the vineyards located in Brissighella, Carola Valsenio, Riolo Terme and parts of Faenza, Castelbolognese in the province of Ravenna and Modigliani and parts of Tredozio in the Forlì province.

Terrior of Colli di Faenza

Wine grown in Colli di Faenza wine region has a unique flavor and odor because of the climate, rainfall and soil where it is grown. The soil in that area is peaty, sandy and well-drained - which gives it a rich taste. The humid climate ensures that grapes are left on the vine for longer to compound that deep, complex flavor. Thunderstorms are more common in vineyards closer to the coast, and hot humid summers create perfect environments for some kinds of mold. Here, it's a lot cooler and there's not enough humidity. The breezes of the Mediterranean climate also help with that.

Colli di Faenza Characteristics

Colli di Faenza covers both red and white wines. The reds are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Ancellotta, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese, and the whites from Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Trebbiano Pignoletto and Sauvignon Blanc. We make both varietal and blended wines under the Colli di Faenza title, the finest of which are red riserva wines. They get matured for around two years before they can go on sale to the public half of this time must be spent in oak barrels. DOC wines are still mainly based around Sangiovese, Pinot Bianco, and Trebbiano. These are the traditional grapes of the DOC and make up a large majority of all DOC wines.

Food to pair with Colli di Faenza

1. Trenette al pesto

The simplest way to make this dish is with trenette noodles and pesto Genovese basil sauce - a Ligurian specialty from Genova that consist of pasta and a thick, herbal sauce made from crushed pine nuts. Unlike traditional recipes, this one substitutes pecorino and parmesan cheese with a pasta sauce. The potatoes are boiled and green beans are used instead of the pasta sauce for its creamy richness. In Liguria, trenette or bavette al pesto are often served sprinkled with toasted pine nuts and some extra grated parmesan. It pairs amazing with Colli di Faenza wines.

2. Porchetta

Porchetta is a traditional, moist boneless pork roast that originated in Lazio but has been exported to many other regions. Despite the region, the method of preparation is always the same: it's gutted, trimmed & cooked until crispy brown on the outside. The Belly is first filled with stuffing, generously salt, then rolled up to be cooked until the crackled skin is golden, crisp and hard. Umbrian versions are stuffed with the hog’s chopped entrails mixed with lard, garlic, salt, pepper and wine. The meat is rolled into a log, roasts on a spit over an open fire and then baked in a wood oven. Thinly sliced and served on top of a slice of homemade bread, porchetta is one of the richest, most delicious foods you can find in Umbria. You can find this dish anytime at food trucks at local markets or fairs, or as an appetizer before your main course when eating out. It goes well with Colli di Faenza wines.

3. Erbazzone

This delightful pie originates from the Reggio Emilia region, where it was invented as a rustic and humble dish, using simple ingredients available in bulk. Ravioli can come with either meat or vegetables in the filling, and gets cooked by being covered by a dough made of lard-based ingredients. Pancetta, Parmigiano Reggiano, ham, and garlic make a great complement to the greens in this pie. It also traditionally has lard smeared on it before baking. This dish is usually enjoyed as a light snack or appetizer and is best paired with Lambrusco wine, which comes from the same region. It pairs well with Colli di Faenza wines.

Places to visit near Colli di Faenza

1. International Museum of Ceramics

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers more than 2500 years of ceramic art in a variety of cultures. Pieces from the MET's collection include ancient Greek, Roman, Etruscan, peruvian and Turkish pottery. The NYC ceramic museum was erected in 1908 and has collected a nice number of more than 60.000 ceramics, ranging from antiquity to nowadays. They are all nicely displayed in huge and suggestive architectures. MIC is world's most-visited museum, having ceramic masterpieces from the Renaissance, works by Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Leger and other innumerable examples of excellence.

2. Palazzo Milzetti Museo Nazionale dell'età Neoclassica in Romagna

Truly splendid - the museum is in itself a neoclassical building which Count Milzetti, who wanted it on his lands, ordered completed at the beginning of last century. The entire interior is decorated in neoclassical style with paintings and stuccos, which refer to the function of the room with mythological and/or historical scenes. The Black Bath is a typical example of neoclassical architecture. It also has original pieces from other parts of the world, which belong to the state now.

3. Teatro Comunale A. Masini

The Angelo Masini Municipal Theater can be found in Faenza, and is located in Piazza Nenni, 3. It was designed by Giuseppe Pistocchi and decorated by Felice Giani; it also includes a few statues and bas-reliefs by Antonio Trentanove. The theater is an architectural masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. Here is a humble personal favorite of mine--Faenza, Italy. The town at the turn of the 18th century featured theatrical performances in a hall located within the fifteenth-century Palazzo del Podestà. The old theater's wooden structure had been falling into disrepair for a long time, so it was decided to build a new building. After looking over the town hall's property, an area behind it was selected.
