Masterton is a sub-region of Wairarapa, New Zealand. It is an important commercial center in the Wairarapa region with a strong market town culture. Where is Masterton Wine Region?

Masterton is located in the southern part of New Zealand's North Island. The region is dominated by vineyards, making it the largest wine-producing area in New Zealand. The region is bounded to the east by Lake Wairarapa, and to the north, west, and south by the Rimutaka Ranges. The eastern district of Masterton contains most of Wairarapa's dry, pedunculate hill forest. 

The History of the Masterton Wine Region

The Small Farms Association laid the foundation for Masterton in 1854. The group, which was headed by Joseph Masters—after whom the town was named—sought to establish working people in rural communities and on farms. Masterton initially expanded slowly, but as its agricultural hinterland got more fruitful, it started to thrive. Wine production in the Masterton area began when French missionaries established vineyards during the 19th century. It became a popular area for wine production due to its proximity to Wellington and its short growing season.

Masterton has one of the best-known wine regions in New Zealand. The region is located on a high volcanic plateau and has fertile soil, perfect for growing grapes.
