Surrounded by picturesque landscapes, Melnik is one of the five renowned wine regions located in the southwest of Bulgaria in the Struma Valley. Grape cultivation and winemaking have been carried out in Melnik for over 8000 years, giving birth to many unique grape varieties – Shiroka Melnishka is one of them and found only in Melnik. The region is perfect for the cultivation of grapes due to its microclimate conditions. It is observed to be one of Bulgaria’s warmest and sunniest wine regions, sheltering several red and white varietals. Melnik wines are classified under the PGI Thracian Valley label.
The Wines & Historical Monuments make Melnik a Unique Region
Melnik has a significant history related to the royal families of the 17th century. Moreover, the special Broadleaf Melnik variety wine was a personal favourite of Sir Winston Churchill, a former British Prime Minister. History reveals that he used to order 500 liters of just Broadleaf Melnik (two barrels) every year for his own consumption. As you visit the Melnik region, you can discover a high concentration of native wines available at six renowned wine cellars – one of which is entirely biodynamic and produces organic wines only. You can also visit the two historical monasteries in Melnik: the largest one is the Rila Monastery (registered as UNESCO Heritage since 1983) and the second one is Rozhen Monastery.
