Family-Owned Winery Celebrating Melnik Grape Heritage
Villa Melnik Winery: A Family Tradition in Winemaking
Villa Melnik Winery is a charming family-owned boutique winery located in Bulgaria’s picturesque Struma River Valley. Surrounded by the stunning Prin and Belasitsa Mountains, this winery is dedicated to producing exceptional wines from the indigenous Melnik grape. The Zikatanov family’s commitment to winemaking reflects a deep respect for the land and its rich historical significance.
Reviving Indigenous and International Varietals
The Zikatanov family has cultivated a diverse range of both indigenous and international grape varieties, aiming to restore the historical prestige of Melnik wines. Their vineyards feature unique blends that combine rare Bulgarian grapes with popular international varietals. Notable wines produced here include Shiroka Melnik, Ruen, Melnik 1300, Mavrud, Sandanski Misket, Keratsuda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The modern winery, renovated in 2013, has a capacity of 250 tons of grapes annually.
Designed across three levels, the winery’s cellars are carved into sandy hills, allowing for a gravity-flow winemaking process. This energy-efficient method ensures that the wine is treated with care, preserving its natural qualities.
A Commitment to Quality and Authenticity
Villa Melnik Winery is dedicated to an honest approach to winemaking, prioritizing the local environment and the preferences of wine enthusiasts. Their high-quality wines maintain the distinct character of the Melnik region, making them a true representation of Bulgaria’s winemaking heritage.
