Villa Melnik Winery, a Family-Owned Boutique Winery focused on Melnik
Villa Melnik Winery is a family-owned boutique winery that focuses on wines made from the Melnik grape. The winery is situated in Bulgaria’s Struma River Valley with breathtaking views of the Prin and Belasitsa Mountains. Their commitment to winemaking represents tradition, courage, and destiny through its connection with the land and its rich history.
Cultivating Both Indigenous and International Grapes
The Zikatanov family at Villa Melnik Winery planted their vineyards with both international and indigenous grapes with the vision of bringing back the glory of the Melnik wine, which was experienced in the history of the area. The grapes are used to create unique blends between rare Bulgarian grapes with continuous innovation, producing varieties such as the Shiroka Melnik wine, Ruen, Melnik 1300, Mavrud, Sandanski Misket, Keratsuda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.
The renovated modern winery at Villa Melnik opened in 2013, and it has a capacity of 250 tons of grapes per year.
The winery is built over three levels, where the cellars are dug into the sandy hills. The winemaking process allows the wine to move with gravity flow through the three levels of the building. This process is energy-efficient and enables the winemakers to treat the wine with care, maintaining its natural structure.
Honest Approach to Winemaking
Villa Melnik Winery takes an honest approach to winemaking with respect for both the local environment, nature, and the wine drinker. They produce excellent, high quality and world-renowned wines that still maintain their distinct Melnik character.
