Crafting Over 30 Unique Wines and Ciders from Local Grapes and Apples
Experience the Flavors of New Mexico
Black Mesa Winery stands out as one of the premier wineries in northern New Mexico, proudly producing wines exclusively from locally grown grapes. Known for their exceptional single-varietal wines and ciders made from homegrown apples, Black Mesa is situated in the historic Velarde Valley, an area cultivated for over 1,000 years by native tribes and Spanish settlers alike. The winery beautifully intertwines centuries of history, featuring ancient Petroglyphs that tell the story of the land.
With over 75,000 Petroglyphs discovered in the valley, more than 50 can be viewed on the property through private tours.
Commitment to Quality Winemaking
At Black Mesa, quality is paramount. The winery cultivates six grape varieties on-site, including Montepulciano, Pinot Grigio, Albarino, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Syrah, while also sourcing grapes from the finest vineyards in northern New Mexico. This dedication to quality results in a diverse range of red, white, rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines, with each variety produced in limited quantities of 40 to 60 cases.
Handcrafted Wine Tasting Experience
The winemaking process at Black Mesa is meticulous. Grapes are handpicked and sorted before being crushed. White grapes undergo fermentation with low oxygen levels, ensuring a crisp finish, while red grapes are fermented in bins that allow for creative experimentation with various yeasts. A unique technique called “hand punching” is used for red wines, extracting natural flavors and colors from the berries. With over 30 wines available, a visit to the winery offers a chance to taste these exceptional creations and purchase your favorites.
