Domaine de la Couvette: A Legacy of Winemaking

Located just 25 minutes from the vibrant city of Lyon, Domaine de la Couvette is nestled in the picturesque village of Bully, in the southern Beaujolais region. This family-owned winery has been producing wine since 1870, spanning five generations of dedicated winemakers. Gautier Marion, the current steward of this legacy, takes pride in crafting high-quality wines using traditional carbonic maceration techniques, with the help of time-honored concrete vats that also serve for aging the wines.

The Unique Terroir of Domaine de la Couvette

Today, Gautier and his father manage the estate, which encompasses 11.3 hectares, including 1.09 hectares of Chardonnay and 5.49 hectares of certified organic vineyards. The land is renowned for its clay-limestone and sandy soils, which contribute to the character of the wines. The vines, nearly 50 years old, reflect the winemakers' commitment to organic practices. The resulting Beaujolais wines are vibrant, spicy, and rich in ripe red fruit flavors, complemented by earthy undertones.

We visited Domaine de la Couvette in Bully, and it was an absolutely memorable experience! Located in the heart of Beaujolais, this family estate, passed down from generation to generation since the 19th century, is a real gem. The vineyard, approximately 13 hectares, is admirably well maintained, with vines aged 10 to 70 years old cultivated on clay-limestone soils. Gautier Marion's passion is reflected in each stage of production, where respect for nature is a priority, notably with an organic conversion initiated in 2009. We had the pleasure of tasting exceptional wines, typical of the region. Their reds, made using the traditional carbonic maceration method, reveal complex aromas of red fruits, spices and earthy notes, while their Chardonnay whites offer remarkable freshness and elegance. Gautier’s warm welcome and fascinating explanations really enriched our visit. We highly recommend this estate to all wine lovers who wish to discover the essence of Beaujolais in an authentic and friendly setting. We will come back, for sure!

Thanks to Claude for taking the time to explain to us the vines, the work in the vineyard, his cellar and his wines. His very, very friendly welcome put all our Spanish friends present at ease and it was a shame that they were unable to buy wine because they were traveling by plane. An appointment has been made for next time. Looking forward to seeing each other again.

bought 4 boxes of Beaujolais Nouveau. Surprised at first sight of the green label on the bottle but totally won over by the wine. Like all the Beaujolais that I have bought for 50 years, this one suffered a little from the journey and it became very good and different again after 3 weeks, however the label always annoys me and does not go down well with drinkers (weird; pharmacy bottle etc.) The graphics are perfect with its glass). I will come back to the Couvette estate when I can. Happy Christmas. J.P.
