A Family Legacy of Exceptional Wines in Beaujolais
A Rich Heritage of Winemaking
M. Chapoutier's story began in 1808 with the establishment of ‘Calvet et Compagnie’ in Tain, France. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier partnered with Rodolphe Delépine, renaming the company ‘Delépine et Chapoutier’ and expanding its reach to markets in Holland, Switzerland, and Germany. After Delépine's retirement, the winery became ‘Chapoutier et Compagnie’. In 1929, Marius built a new winery at the base of Hermitage hill, and his son Marc took over in 1937, rebranding it as ‘M. Chapoutier’. Under Michel Chapoutier's leadership, the winery embraced biodynamic practices, expanding its influence globally.
Commitment to Biodynamic Practices
Since 1991, biodynamic farming has been central to M. Chapoutier's philosophy. Inspired by Austrian scientist Rudolf Steiner, Michel Chapoutier adopted these methods to enhance the vineyard's ecosystem. This approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of plants, soil, and climate, allowing the true essence of the terroir to shine through in every bottle.
Single Vineyard Selections
The Hermitage hill is unique, showcasing four geological eras. Recognizing this, Michel Chapoutier vinifies grapes from distinct terroirs separately, allowing each vineyard's character to express itself fully. This practice highlights the specific soil types, climate conditions, and traditional winemaking techniques that contribute to the wine's individuality.
Innovative Braille Labeling
M. Chapoutier was a pioneer in accessibility, introducing braille on wine labels in 1994 with the Monier de la Sizeranne Hermitage. By 1996, all Chapoutier wines featured braille, ensuring that visually impaired customers could identify their selections independently. This initiative was inspired by a friend's experience and serves as a tribute to the Sizeranne family, whose vineyard is now part of Chapoutier's legacy. The braille labels provide essential information, including the producer, vintage, vineyard, region, and wine color.
