Happs Estate Wines – Celebrating 40 Vintages

Happs Estate Wines is a family-owned winery perched atop Leeuwin Ridge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This year marks a significant milestone as they celebrate their 40th vintage. Erland Ros Happ planted the first vines in 1978 after years of running a pottery business at their Yallingup site. Recognizing the potential for grape growing, Erl expanded their operations by acquiring another farm an hour south in the early 1980s.
With one of the largest wine collections in the region, Happs Estate produces around 40 different wines.

Where Art Meets Winemaking

Both Erl and Ros began their careers as teachers, blending their backgrounds in science and the arts into their winery. Erl is a knowledgeable expert on global climates, while Ros contributes her passion for music education. As patrons of the arts, they actively promote their pottery and art gallery. Happs Estate Wines sources grapes from some of the finest producers in the Margaret River region, ensuring high-quality wines that reflect the local terroir.

A Diverse Range of Grape Varieties

Happs Estate offers a wide selection of wines, including Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Nebbiolo, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, and Tannat. The winery crafts intriguing red, white, rosé, sparkling, dessert, and fortified wines, using only the best grapes. They also provide three preservative-free options, catering to sulfite-sensitive customers. Visitors can enjoy a large working pottery studio and gallery, featuring beautiful creations from resident artists available for purchase.

We love Happs! Such a chill vibe but with excellent wines and huge variety, have always been made to feel so welcome but without the pretentious vibe that so many wineries can have. Always recommend to others and great to hang out and have a picnic too

Beautiful winery to visit with beautiful staff. I love the idea of serving yourself wine tastings meaning you can control what you want to try and how much you would like to try. Very easy and feels less pressured as you take your own time to do it. Free tastings too which was a welcome surprise! They have a beautiful outdoor area for picnics and amazing pottery art pieces to buy. definitely worth a visit!

A visit to Happs Wines is a throwback to the days when down to earth service and a genuine welcome were the norm. The owners bucked the (disappointing) trend and refused to introduce a tasting fee. I reckon everyone should buy a bottle from them for this reason alone. It’s how it should be. Their unique tasting experience is brilliant. You can try as many wines as you like, though it is suggested you “plan your journey.” A tasting at Happs is an experiential, enjoyable affair which can be completed at your own pace and timing. It’s no wonder the tasting area is always full, as opposed to other wineries. For me this is the best winery in the South West. They’ve stayed true to their values and offer a unique tasting experience and an unrivalled level of genuine hospitality.

Beautiful winery with galleries, pottery sculptures and a fantastic extended garden as well. Their wine tasting is a ‘help yourself’ arrangement, properly set up, but unusual for untrustworthy old timers like me. But no complaints! There are many wines, of different pricing levels, something for everyone. Friendly staff too.

We visited Karen at Happs Winery about two weeks ago now to be only welcomed so well. Very friendly and to our surprise a free 30 min, unlimited wine tasting. The wine is quite nice and they could charge for wine tasting very easily but they choose not too. Worth a visit, try the wines, and buy a case to bring home! You won't be disappointed.
