Paul Cluver Winery: Pioneers of Elgin
Paul Cluver Wine Estate is a 4th generation family business that has been farming in the Elgin Valley for more than 120 years. They are the pioneers of Elgin as a premium wine-growing region that produces the fine cool-climate Elgin wine.
Dr. Paul Cluver had planted the first vineyards in the Elgin and groomed it to become one of the first Commercial wine cellars in the region.
The winery is engraved in history and is still run by the Cluver family to this day and at present are run by 4th generation
Part of the UNESCO world heritage
They focus on producing world-class red, white and dessert wines that reflect the uniqueness of the valley, especially their estate De Rust. They are mindful of their actions both on the environment as well as the community. More than half of the estate is under conservation.
The winery is a part of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere, established in 1998, which is the 1st proclaimed biosphere in South Africa with UNESCO. Since 2008, Paul Cluver Wines has been a Conservation Champion. They are closely associated with De Rust Futura school which was founded by their grandmother Gertrude Cluver more than 60 years ago.
SA’s best Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs
The influence of Cluvers winery has been enormous to establish Elgin as one of SA’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir regions. The grape varieties produced in the vineyards of this estate are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Noble Late Harvest Riesling. At present, four of the five Clüver siblings are involved in the business taking over the estate from the parents, Paul and Songvei.
