200 Years of Women in Winemaking

Petra Winery's story began in 1808 when Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, sister of Napoleon and Princess of Lucca and Piombino, chose this land to initiate an agricultural and vinicultural project. Fast forward two centuries, Francesca Moretti discovered this enchanting estate during a father-daughter trip to Bordeaux. Captivated by its rich history and culture, she shifted her focus from veterinary medicine to agriculture and enology. In 1997, her father, Vittorio Moretti, acquired 60 hectares in San Lorenzo and 45 in Campiglia Marittima, near Piombino, marking the start of a modern winemaking venture. For Francesca, Petra became a cherished second home, as beloved as her roots in Franciacorta.

A Unique Ecosystem of Landscapes

Suvereto boasts a winemaking heritage that dates back to the Greeks and Etruscans, who crafted wine in amphoras. However, the land's potential is not solely defined by its history; Petra is characterized by diverse landscapes and microclimates. This unique ecosystem, enriched by warm underground currents and fresh breezes, allows for the cultivation of exceptional grapes. Surrounded by natural parks and overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Petra's landscape is as remarkable as the wines it produces.

Architectural Marvel by Mario Botta

The winery's design, crafted by renowned architect Mario Botta, reflects a harmonious blend of nature and technology. The cylindrical structure serves as a hub for both visitor reception and winemaking activities. The roof, sloping in line with the hill, is where grape clusters are gathered and gently processed into fermentation tanks. Each architectural element is thoughtfully integrated into the winemaking process, enhancing the overall experience at Petra.

Nestled in the beautiful Val di Cornia, you'll find the stunning Petra Winery, created by the talented Swiss architect Mario Botta. It's a special place brought to life by Vittorio Moretti, who had a wonderful dream that he entrusted to his daughter, Francesca Moretti Petra Wine Estate is an incredible place to connect with nature! It is surrounded by beautiful olive and oak trees, with lovely vineyards that produce the delicious Petra, Quercegobbe, and Hebo wines. We enjoyed a light lunch featuring products from local farms near the winery. Christoph, our guide, was exceptionally knowledgeable about the wines and the local area; he truly went above and beyond to make our 3-4 hour private tour unforgettable. Visiting this stunning area of Tuscany is a must! The futuristic underground cellars, with their sturdy concrete springs, and tunnels carved into the mountain rock, are truly captivating. It's like stepping into a work of art! To conclude the tour, we ascended the 141 steps made of Verona pink 'prun' stone, leading to the top of the winery's cylinder, where we enjoyed spectacular views overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. www.petrawine.it Jeanette Servidio Christoph Doelz #petra #petraexperience #petrawine #degustazione #vino #wine #tuscanywine

I visited the Petra winery during a tasting booked well in advance. Recommended visit for both wine enthusiasts and laymen; the tour was very interesting and Cristoph (the person at the reception who explained the history of the company and accompanied us during the visit and tasting) was very professional and friendly.

A quality experience with considerable charm. The combination of architecture, entrepreneurship and the revaluation of the territory favour the taste of a sublime and complete experience. The formula is excellent with a high-quality lunch and a pairing between food and wine that borders on perfection. Before the commercial push can make prices rise as much as those of the nearby land of Bolgheri (of which Petra wines have little to envy in terms of quality), it is recommended to live the experience.
