Hiša Štekar Winery: winemaking with love and dedication

Hiša Štekar Winery is located in Goriška Brda in western Slovenia. It is certified as one of the pioneering wineries which are biological. The tradition and traditional methods are kept fairly alive in this winery and is also taken into consideration in the cellar. The wine is highly taken care of with immense love and devotion. Grapes in the vineyard are living creatures and similarly, wine too is believed to be a living being and is treated as such.

Following a natural way of winemaking

The hills on which these vines grow, the Gorizia Hills plays a special role for the vines. The soil is rich with minerals, the sun in the Primorska region gives the right amount of heat to the grapes and the complimentary breeze, which makes the condition ideal. Nature gives as much as it receives is what they believe in the winery which is why the vines are provided with conditions that are as natural as possible. The vines are nourished with natural sprays certified as biological winemakers. The grapes and wines are both certified as biological products. The traditional methods are also followed for winemaking in the cellar and likewise, minimum intervention is used in this process as well.

Following the footsteps of the grandfather

The winemaking business started in their family with the great grandfather Emil. He taught his son Roman to take care of the vines and the ways to make wine. Roman took over the farm and winemaking and additionally began tourist and accommodation business. At present, the head is Jure, Roman’s younger son, who took over the winemaking in 2012.
The grape varietals grown in this vineyard are Rebula, Tokai Friullano, Pinot gris, Mavazia, Merlot, Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. These grapes make the estate’s finest red, white, rose and sparkling wines.
