Ernst Bretz, a Family-Owned Winery with Rich Traditions
Ernst Bretz Winery is a family winery, based in the heart of the Rheinhessen. The winery has been running since 1721 and is now managed by the 9th and 10th generation of the family. Ernst Bretz Winery respects its rich traditions and aims to work hard to make their wines better every day. To maintain the high standard of their wines, they combine manual work with modern machines and technology. All vineyard work, wine cellar work, such as fermentation through to the bottling of wines, is done by themselves. They don’t buy any grapes from outside growers maintaining complete control over wine production.
Ernst Bretz’s single-vineyard wines have received many prestigious awards and honors worldwide.
Visit to Enjoy Magnificent Views of the Taunus or Donnersberg
Most of their vineyards are present on the slopes of Petersberg from where one can enjoy magnificent views of the Taunus or Donnersberg. The vines are planted here in multiple small plots that create a unique microclimate suitable for the growth and cultivation of grapes. The soil is clay-based and has a lot of minerals. The winery tries to protect nature and its land and vines so that the grapes are high-quality, making wines with great minerality and structure.
Wines from Gifted Rheinhessen Terrain
The main grape varieties grown at Ernst Bretz Winery include Riesling, Spätburgunder, Grauer Burgunder, Weißer Burgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay. The workers manually pick the best grapes and use them to make their famous red, white, rosé, sparkling, and dessert wines. Fermentation in steel tanks with aging in wood barrels gives the wines an intense flavor and complexity typical of the gifted Rheinhessen terrain.
