Vidigueira, Alentejo
In this handpicked tour, you will get the chance to get to know not only the history of two important and family-owned wineries, but also how they produce and age their Alentejo DOC and Talha/Amphora wines.
In Portugal, the Alentejo region has long been the guardian of talhawines. Here, the techniques developed by the Romans for making wine in the clay amphorae called talhas have been safeguarded. The talha winemaking process has been handed down from generation to generation throughout history, almost without change. Nevertheless, there is more than one way to make wine in talhas, with certain variations from region to region, according to local tradition.
The wine made in talhas is unmatched. Whether it results from more classic procedures or modernised ones, talha wine is the epitome of the millenary wine culture of the Alentejo.
Understand how the effects of the region's climate and rich soil influence the grapes, learn about the special storage techniques that result in these distinctive flavors and hear about the preparation of both unfortified and fortified wines.
a new building with a restaurant, shop and art center was opened in 2016. The building is partly covered with schist slates. The center stands out but also seamlessly fits into its surroundings. The use of natural local flora on the estate completes the visitor’s experience of the natural habitat of the Alentejo region.
Lunch is a must in our tour! You will be savoring Alentejo's local dishes paired with DOC Alentejo wines in one of the two distinguished wineries we will be visiting.
To end the day in the best way, you will enjoy a relaxing two hours cruise along the Alqueva lake.
