A Rich Winemaking Heritage

Founded in 1093 by the Viscount of Narbonne, Abbaye de Fontfroide boasts a winemaking history that spans over nine centuries. Originally cultivated by Cistercian monks, the vineyard has thrived as these dedicated artisans honed their understanding of the land and its unique terroir. Today, the estate continues to produce exceptional wines, drawing from the same plots that have been nurtured for generations. Nestled in the picturesque Languedoc-Roussillon region, the vineyard benefits from sandy-clay soils that enhance the character of both red and white grapes, allowing them to mature slowly and develop rich, aromatic profiles.

The result is a collection of wines that are both complex and bursting with distinctive fruit flavors.

Beautiful Gardens Surrounding the Winery

The estate features two stunning gardens: The Roseraie and the Italian Garden. Visitors can stroll through one of the largest rose gardens in Southern France, showcasing over 2,500 varieties of roses. From the terrace, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.

The winery is also an ideal venue for hosting private events, including parties, weddings, and photo shoots, providing a unique backdrop for any occasion.

Wonderful, former Romanesque Cistercian abbey, well maintained, restored and carefully renewed (e.g. impressive new church windows) with a barrel-vaulted pseudo-basilica (main nave of the nave without windows), two-story cloister and large monastery garden. Everything fits into the landscape in perfect harmony. A place for relaxation, enjoyment of art and recharging one's batteries.

It is privately owned and very well preserved. It has a wine cellar where wine tastings are held and a small shop. It also has a highly recommended restaurant.

Beautiful abbey full of history. Absolutely magnificent stained glass windows including those in the chapel of the dead in the abbey even if some will find it offbeat. Visit made as a family with 3 young adults.....we all appreciated it. Very reasonable price for the site; We had the family pass + 1 child for 50 euros. Very warm welcome. Thank you.
