Semillon is a grape variety native to Bordeaux region. It is one of the most widely planted grapes in France. The skin is white and the grape has few tannins, medium acidity, medium body and almost oily consistency. Depending on its origin, we can find flavors of lemon, pear, or papaya. In Semillon, we can also find the similar flavors as in Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc.
Where is Semillon from?
Semillon is the third widely planted grape after Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in France. This variety is also grown in countries such as South Africa, the USA, Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Israel, and Australia (which is the second largest producer of this grape after France).
Interesting story about Semillon
Semillon's history is not definite. It is confirmed that it arrived in Australia in the early 1800s, and that already in the 1820s it occupied more than 80 percent of the vineyards in South Africa. There it was called "wyndruif", i.e. grape. Sémillon is one of three permitted white grapes in the Bordeaux region along with Moscatel and Sauvignon Blanc.
Semillon grape characteristics
Semillon and its powerful vines easily adapt to all types of soil. It enjoys the sun and is resistant to the spring cold. Calcium-containing soils give us more intense aromas, while if the grape is planted in siliceous soil, we get softer tones.
Semillon Wines
Sémillon from a warm climate countries like South Africa tends to have mango or peach flavors, while a Semillon grown in the colder climates like the one on Bordeaux may have less sour flavors. In general, Sémillon is often mixed with Muscadelle or Sauvignon Blanc. It is also used in production of noble sweet wines such as Sauternes, Cadillac, Cerons etc.

Sémillon pairs excellently with chicken and pork. Sémillon is a good alternative when it comes to raw fish, especially tastes great with cod, or other sea fish. For those who love vegetarian food, Sémillon goes well with all types of salads, especially those with dried fruits and nuts. We can also combine it with Comté, Gruyere, or Cheddar.
