Travel Guide to Porto & Douro Wine Regions

Porto & Douro wine regions are two of the most famous wine-producing and wine trade places in Portugal. Forming a part of world-renowned Douro Valley, Porto has played a big role in the production of excellent Port wines. Since the start of the wine industry in this region, the land following the course of the Douro River has been worked by hand and shaped into terraces, which create spectacular landscapes. The valley of the Douro River provides a natural amphitheatre in which endless rows of vines are planted. The landscape leaves all who see it completely enraptured by its deep valleys and gorges, clean and crisp air, terraced Porto vineyards, and the clear blue waters of the Douro River. The cultural landscape of Alto Douro is protected by UNESCO for having an outstanding universal value.

Undeniably one of the crown jewels of Portuguese viticulture, Port Wine emanates from the breathtaking Alto Douro region. Recognized as the world's first demarcated and regulated wine region since 1756, Alto Douro is the exclusive producer of this fortified wine. The region's unparalleled beauty and evolving cultural landscape has earned it a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The unique combination of the Douro Valley's terroir and centuries-old wine-making traditions results in the rich, diverse, and internationally renowned Port wine, a testament to Portugal's wine legacy

Douro Valley wines

Some of the world’s greatest wines from the world’s poorest soils.

In the heart of Portugal, the Douro Valley wines weave a tapestry of complexity and allure, captivating wine enthusiasts with their rich heritage and exceptional craftsmanship. Carved by the serpentine Douro River, this picturesque region boasts terraced vineyards that cling to rugged slopes, a testament to the dedication of generations of winemakers who have nurtured the land.

Although Douro Valley and Porto share a connection to Douro River and they have a common history of wine production, there are differences between these two wine regions. Porto, which is also the second largest city in Portugal is famous for Port wine production, while Douro Valley, situated 3 hours away from the city is also renowned for its fine unfortified wines, both red and white.

Douro Valley (2)

Long famous as the source of port wine, the Douro Valley is now also renowned for its fine, rich unfortified wines, both red and white.

Douro Valley is divided into three distinctive territories that produce different styles of wines.

The first area lies to the west in the Baixo(Lower) Corgo wine region. This is where Porto, the capital of Port Wine is located. The centre of Lower Corgo is the city of Peso da Regua which is home to the famous Museu do the Douro and the Solar do Vinho do Porto. Both of these attractions are a must-see to learn more and taste the wonderful nectar of Port.

Cima(Upper) Corgo is the center of fine Port Wine production as well as the source of many high-quality unfortified wines. Town Pinhao in Upper Corgo produces excellent Port Wine. When visiting Pinhao, one cannot miss a visit to the Sao Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint near Peso de Regua.

The third sub-region Douro Superior stretches all the way to the Spanish border and it is the hottest and driest sub-regions. It is the youngest territory and a source of many high-quality wines.

What to expect from Douro Valley Wines

The Douro Valley is renowned not only for its esteemed Ports but also for its distinctive still wines that reflect the unique terroir and microclimates of the area. The symphony of grape varieties, from Touriga Nacional to Tinta Roriz, intertwines with the nuances of soil, elevation, and sun exposure, resulting in wines that exude a kaleidoscope of flavors and aromas.

Winemaking in the Douro Valley is an art that marries tradition with innovation. Ancient stone wineries stand in harmony with state-of-the-art facilities, where technology and research play a pivotal role in refining the winemaking process. The passion and commitment of winemakers echo through every barrel and bottle, a dedication that has earned the region worldwide recognition.

As you embark on a journey through the Douro Valley wines, you'll encounter a diverse range of vintages, each with its own story to tell. From elegant and fruit-forward young wines to complex and age-worthy Reservas, the Douro Valley caters to all palates and preferences.

Port Wine: An unrivaled icon of Porto and Douro Valley

The most famous wine produced in all of Porto and Douro wine regions is Port. Many across the world have tried to imitate this fortified wine but nothing compares to the original. However, according to the EU regulations about Protected Designation of Origin, only one produced in Portugal is allowed to be labelled as "Port".

Port Wine

There are many different categories and styles of Port but they can be classified into four categories:

  • Ruby Port, which has fruity characteristics and ruby red colour. In a glass of Ruby Port, you will find aromas of red berries with notes of plum, cinnamon, and cherries. Ruby ports are consumed younger, after 2 years of ageing. This period of time helps wines to develop complex aromas but at the same time not to lose fruity characteristics.
  • Tawny Port has a longer ageing period in small barrels. Tawny Port has a nutty, oxidative character. The name of this Port comes from its pale "tawny" colour which is a result of oxygen interaction with wines in barrels.
  • White Port is something everybody would enjoy as an aperitif or base of the cocktails in the bars of Porto. It is produced from indigenous grape varieties such as Rabigato, Viosinho, Gouveio, and Malvasia and displays aromas of apricot, roasted nuts and baked apples.
  • Rosé Port is something innovative and vibrant from the northern part of the Douro. While producing Rosé Port, juice has minimal skin contact, which gives Rosé colour and fewer tannins to wines. The result is very aromatic, refreshing distinct wine, absolutely irresistible during hot summer days.
