Where is the Henty wine region?

The Henty wine area is a subregion of Victoria with abundant natural beauty and magnificent vistas. The Henty wine area is located in southwestern Victoria, with South Australia to the west and the coast to the south. The Hopkins River's headwaters are to the east of the Henty wine region, while Cavendish is to the northeast. This superb wine-growing region is focused on the town of Henty. History of the Henty wine region

The Henty wine region was named after the Henty brothers who were the first settlers in the region during the early 19th century. They were also credited for the first vines planted in the area. Before receiving AGI status as Henty region, the area was known as Drumborg or Far Southwest Victoria. Viticulture in the Henty wine region was initiated during the mid-1960s by Karl Seppelt who discovered the part as an ideal cool area for the production of sparkling wines. Commercial wine production started since then which first started on a 100-hectare vineyard planted at Drumborg.  

The terroir and geography of the Henty wine region

The region is cold yet with ample sunshine hours over the year. The coastal area of the region has a maritime climate with cool winds blowing from the south, originating in Antarctica. The ripening in the Autumn allows grapes to ripen slowly and evenly with low yields with utmost quality that are perfect for producing wines. The region covers around 140 hectares of vineyard ranging from 0-458 meters above sea level. The average rainfall accounts for 291mm annually. 

The soil is mostly Basalt soils with gravel, loams, and red clay. The passionate vinegrowers have started planting vines on rich black volcanic clays, maritime sandy loams, and limestone-based soils across the region.
