Where is the Kvareli wine region located?

The wine region of Kvareli is situated in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. Kvareli is encircled by the municipalities of Telavi, Gurjaani and Lagodekhi. The mountainous, moderately cold, yet sunny place creates a favourable environment for vine-growing, which is probably why Kakheti is one of the most influential wine regions in Georgia; with the volume of its viticulture, it is the first. Other notable appellations in the Region of Kakheti, neighbouring Kvareli, are Manavi, Tsinandali and Napareuli. They all produce distinctive wines.

History of the Kvareli wine region

The region is one of the oldest winemaking areas in Georgia, with grape cultivation dating back to ancient times. Kvareli has a rich history of winemaking, and the vines were first cultivated there by monks as early as the bronze times. By then, grapes were used primarily for religious purposes, it was there when one of the first temples was built, and today its ruins are still preserved in Nekresi. It was not until centuries later that Kvareli became an important wine-producing area. Today, it is an authorized Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) in Georgia, with numerous wineries producing premier quality wine. In addition, the region is also home to several cultural monuments, including medieval monasteries with old Georgian manuscripts written by monks and priests who had lived there centuries ago. It is the birthplace of prominent Georgian writer and poet Ilia Chavchavadze, whose house is now a local museum, and also of influential theatre director Kote Marjanishvili.

Terroir of Kvareli wine region

The area has a temperate and moderately humid climate with frequent but not very speedy winds created by surrounding mountains, mild winters and long, warm summers, which are perfect for growing grapes. The warmest months are July and August, when the temperature reaches a maximum of 38 °C, but that rarely happens. In summer, Kvareli weather is usually 25 °C. In winter, the lowest that it can be is -10 °C; therefore, there is little but still a threat of frosts. Grape’s technical maturation usually takes place at the end of September. The vines grow on slopes at an altitude of 350-550 m above sea level, providing an ideal microclimate for grape growing and ensuring that the grapes are not exposed to too much heat and sunlight. The soil of the Kvareli wine region is mainly made up of alluvial, clay and loam, but also there are other sub-varietals, depending on the microzone. This type of soil is very fertile and well-drained. Soil type is critical in determining the quality and variety of wine produced. The clay and loam soil found in the Kvareli wine region provides excellent conditions for grape production. These soils are well-suited for grape cultivation and make it possible to produce high-quality wines.
