A Unique Family Winery in Uruguay's Rivera Region
Family Winery Built Inside a Hill
Bodega Cerro Chapeu is located just 12 kilometers east of Rivera-Santana do Livramento, straddling the border of Brazil and Uruguay. This family-owned winery, established in 1975, is uniquely built into a hill, utilizing a gravity-fed design across four levels. Siblings Francisco, Margarita, and Gabriela Carrau, along with their families, have dedicated themselves to creating wines that express the distinct character of this remote region in northern Uruguay. The winery's construction incorporates local stone, emphasizing their commitment to sustainable practices and low-input winemaking that respects the environment.
Organically Cultivated Grapes
The Rivera region boasts one of the highest environmental sustainability ratings according to the Yale and Columbia universities' Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI). Its deep red, sandy soil is rich in minerals and offers excellent drainage, making it ideal for grape cultivation. The Carrau family has introduced Tannat grapes, contributing to the creation of exceptional red wines. Their estate features a variety of grape types, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Petit Manseng, Viognier, Nebbiolo, Teroldego, and Sousao. The finest grapes are selected to produce their acclaimed red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines. In 2005, Dr. Francisco Carrau expanded their reach by launching their wines in the United States.
