Bodega Cantina Meroni: Velvet-textured wines just a short drive from Verona

Located near the stunning city of Verona, Cantina Meroni is nestled in Sant'Ambrogio, one of the five provinces of the DOC Valpolicella Classica. The Meroni family, now in its third generation, continues the legacy of winemaking using traditional methods. Their velvety wines reflect the rich history of the Meroni family. Since 1935, Cantina Meroni has sourced grapes from two estates, Sengia and Maso, situated in the picturesque San Giorgio valley, home to a beautiful Romanesque parish church. The other estate is located in Grola, the birthplace of Recioto and Amarone wines.

Crafting exquisite Amarone and Recioto Della Valpolicella

Today, the Meroni brothers manage 15 hectares of land, with 11 hectares dedicated to high-quality grape production. They cultivate several grape varieties, including the renowned Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. With the prestigious Amarone and Recioto Della Valpolicella DOCG status, they produce exceptional red, white, and dessert wines.

Olive oil production and modern winemaking at Cantina Meroni

The remaining four hectares of the estate are devoted to olive groves and forests, promoting the region's natural balance. Visitors can purchase their exquisite extra virgin olive oil during their visit. The historic winery has been renovated into a modern facility that respects nature and family traditions. It features stainless steel tanks for optimal grape fermentation and classic Slavonian oak barrels ranging from 20 to 25 Hl for effective aging and refinement of wines over 6 to 24 months.

Among the many wineries in the classic Valpolicella area, we chose the Meroni farm because of its good reviews. We booked the local tasting, which took us on a wonderful journey where we could feel the love for the land and the great passion for one's work, which we could then enjoy in the glass at the moment of tasting. Spectacular Amarone, even the Superiore is worth buying, really remarkable.

I discovered this winery, I would say, 3 years ago and out of laziness I'm only posting the review after 4 or 5 visits 😉. For me it is a reference point for Valpolicella: great old-style wines, as I like them, and great hospitality and competence from Carlo and his colleague at the point of sale. Feeling at home, pampered and looked after with great attention and professionalism. The Amarone "il Velluto" and the special "Fondatore" are authentic masterpieces. To approach the subject, the ordinary Amarone "Carlo Meroni" is a cornerstone. Niche cellar: for lovers of the genre. See you soon. Alberto Z.

Our experience at Cantina Meroni was a true journey through the wine culture and the territory. With his passion and competence, Davide made the visit not only a culinary experience, but also an immersion in the history and traditions of the winery and Valpolicella. During the tasting, Davide proved to be extremely helpful, guiding us through a wide selection of wines and allowing us to discover the different nuances and characteristics of each one. The quality of the wines fully reflects the commitment and dedication that the winery puts into its production process, culminating in the excellence represented by the Amorane Velluto - Riserva del Fondatore. The cellar itself is a gem: small, well-kept and conveys a sense of authenticity and tradition that is reflected in its wines. Without a doubt, a visit to the Meroni winery is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy the authentic essence of Valpolicella wines.

More than a visit, I would say it was an experience. Hospitality, professionalism, competence and a lot of availability. Difficult qualities nowadays. The products represent the excellent heart of Valpolicella very well. I recommend trying the wine-salami tasting. Tradition and typicality. Highly recommended.
