Boutique Winery Crafting Traditional Sparkling Wines in Romania
Carastelec Winery: Romania's Pioneer in Sparkling Wines
Carastelec Winery stands as the first dedicated producer of sparkling wines in Romania, nestled in the historic Crisana region of Transylvania, near the majestic Magura Simleului Mountain. This area is renowned for its mineral-rich soils, which contribute to the cultivation of grapes that yield vibrant, full-bodied wines reflecting the unique terroir. Established in 2011, the winery spans 22 hectares of vineyards, carefully selected by leading Hungarian oenologist Tibor Gal for its exceptional microclimate.
The Scenic Hills of Carastelec
The picturesque hills surrounding Carastelec provide an ideal environment for crafting high-quality wines. In 2012, the winery constructed an underground cellar equipped with advanced temperature control and air-conditioning systems, funded by the EU. By 2013, the cellar was enhanced with state-of-the-art machinery, including stainless steel tanks and an automatic bottling system. Two tanks are dedicated to sparkling wines, while four are reserved for red wines, which age gracefully in oak barrels, imparting a rich fruity character. The estate cultivates key grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Feteasca Regala, and Rhein Riesling, ensuring that only the finest grapes are selected for their acclaimed red, white, and sparkling wines. The winery's owners also manage vineyards and cellars in Hungary's prestigious Tokaj region.
