Carastelec Winery, the First Company in Romania Producing Sparkling Wines
The Carastelec winery is the first company in Romania that mainly produces sparkling wines. Present in the Crisana region that is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Transylvania in close proximity to the Magura Simleului Mountain. It is a crystalline island in northwestern Transylvania that has a soil type with a lot of minerals. It helps to grow grapes that make full-bodied, fresh and fruity wines that reflect the qualities of their distinctive terroir. The winery was established in 2011 with the planting of 22 hectares of vineyards near the village. Leading Hungarian oenologist, Tibor Gal, chose this spot because of the unique microclimate here.
The Hills of Carastelec
The vineyards on the hills of Carastelec are perfect for the production of high-quality wines. The underground cellar was built in 2012 using EU funds and was fit with temperature-controlling systems and modern air-conditioning technology. In 2013, the latest machinery and innovative technology were installed in the cellar including stainless steel tanks, cooling systems and an automatic bottling system for their wines. Two tanks are reserved for their sparkling wines, and four are used for the red wines. The aging takes place in oak barrels and helps the wines to attain a distinct fruity taste and fragrance. The main grapes that grow in their estate include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Feteasca Regala and Rhein Riesling. The best grapes are used to make their unique red, white and famous sparkling wines. The foreign owners also have vineyards and cellars in Hungary’s Tokaj region.
