Castello di Corbara: Blending History and Tradition

Located in the heart of Umbria, the Castello di Corbara estate has rediscovered its historical roots along with its time-honored traditions. The winery lies between Orvieto and Todi, overlooking Lake Corbara.
The estate has ancient origins and a rich, fascinating history dating back to Roman times, reaching its peak in the Middle Ages when it was a fief of the Counts of Montemarte. In more recent history, and highlighting its current strengths, for over fifty years Castello di Corbara has proudly maintained a wine-growing heritage of about 100 hectares within a vast estate of more than 1,200 hectares, all within a single property.

Magnificent Vineyards for Fine Wines

The vineyards were planted to harness the unique microclimates of each plot, located between 100 and 350 meters above sea level, and to take full advantage of the diverse soil types found in the area. Continuous monitoring of the vineyards’ microclimates allows us to operate with full respect for the environment while ensuring the production of authentic, high-quality wines.
The Patrizi family, with their extensive entrepreneurial experience, acquired Castello di Corbara in 1997 with the ambitious goal of revitalizing the estate and its wine production.

A wide variety of grape varieties is a key factor in producing wines that are both genuine and high quality. One of the winery’s main objectives is to revive the native grape varieties that have grown here for over a century, launching wines that are deeply connected to their place of origin.

Red and White Wines of Corbara

Among the reds, the winery has focused on enhancing the production of Sangiovese and Montepulciano. A historic clone of the latter was discovered on the estate, reproduced in the spring of 2003, and replanted in an area with an ideal microclimate for the variety.
Other varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc have also thrived. These have long been cultivated on the estate’s lands and have adapted perfectly to their designated soils, allowing them to fully express their unique characteristics.

As for the whites, since the winery is located in one of the oldest areas of the Orvieto DOC, it can proudly produce and label its whites as Orvieto Classico. Among them is a noteworthy clone of Grechetto, distinguished by its strong, original personality—a true reflection of the terrain it has called home for decades. Each new planting is carried out only after careful and thorough technical evaluation.

A few weeks ago we visited in the company of Giovanni, who told us the history of the winery and its wines with great attention and enthusiasm... We will definitely come back in the summer!

The winery is located near Lake Corbara. The vineyards are positioned higher up and you need a car to visit them but all the "crus" are carefully marked with signs. Even though I arrived at an inappropriate time (late lunch time), I found a prompt welcome. The tasting offered was as extensive as the description of the company and each label. The barrel cellar is nice to visit.

The visit to Castello di Corbara was a very pleasant experience. The staff was extremely friendly and explained the wines to us very well during our short tasting. You can tell that great importance is placed on good customer service, and the wine really impressed customers during sales discussions, which we really appreciated. The tasting did lead us to buy a bit more than planned. However, since the wine is truly excellent, we're happy to consume it. A visit I would happily recommend! However, the castle can only be seen from a distance and isn't on the grounds.
