Family Winemakers Crafting Unique Savuto Wines from Handpicked Grapes
The Colacino Wine Company in Calabria
Located in the picturesque Calabria region of Italy, the Colacino Wine Company has a rich history rooted in winemaking. Known as the Land of Wine since ancient Greek times, Calabria offers ideal conditions for producing wines with exceptional qualities. The winery was founded by Vittorio Colacino, a local doctor who cultivated vines and created a distinctive wine called Britto, characterized by its spicy cherry aroma.
Winery in the Scenic Sila Area
Today, Vittorio's children, Maria Teresa and Mauro, manage the family business, blending traditional methods with modern techniques. In his 1975 book, Mario Soldati famously stated, “Nothing is Savuto, Savuto is only Britto,” highlighting the unique nature of their wines. The vineyards are strategically located on terraced land with small stone walls overlooking the River Savuto Valley, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level. This stunning landscape in the Sila area of Marzi contributes to the character and originality of their wines.
The land imparts unique characteristics to each grape variety.
Exceptional Grape Varieties
The Colacino vineyards are home to several high-quality grape varieties, including Greco Nero, Nerello Cappuccio, Arvino, Pecorello, Malvasia Blanca, Mantonico, and Greco Bianco. The winery prioritizes quality over quantity, with workers handpicking only the finest grapes for winemaking. The red wines are known for their rich black cherry flavor, while the rosé wines feature a vibrant pink hue, fruity taste, and floral aroma. The white wines offer delightful floral notes, complemented by hints of citrus and pineapple.
