A Historic Winery with Rich Flavors and Heritage
The Goygol Winery
Established in 1860, Goygol Winery is the oldest wine producer in Azerbaijan, boasting a rich history of 150 years. Originally founded by the Schwab Germans in Yelenendorf, now known as the Goygol region, this winery is a cornerstone of the South Caucasus wine industry. Goygol was a pioneer in exporting Azerbaijani wines, reaching markets in Germany and the Netherlands by the late 19th century. By the 1980s, it ranked as the third-largest producer of cognac and wine in the Soviet Union, earning accolades in various European competitions over the years.
Winemaking Practices at the Winery
Spanning 517 hectares, Goygol Winery's vineyards were planted between 2006 and 2008, featuring a blend of high-quality local and European grape varieties. The winery cultivates grapes such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat, among others, all adapted to the local climate. The grapes are harvested from the lowlands of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, at an elevation of 600 meters, ensuring optimal ripeness and quality. The winery's state-of-the-art cellar, built in the mid-18th century, is unique in the Caucasus. Here, wines are aged in oak barrels, enhancing their aroma and flavor profile, resulting in a truly distinctive tasting experience.
