Il Verro is a boutique winery nestled in the volcanic soils near Monte Maggiore, once the royal hunting grounds of the Borbone family. Born from a lifelong friendship, the estate is devoted to reviving native grape varieties such as Casavecchia, Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero, and the rare Coda di Pecora. With 30,000 bottles produced annually from estate-owned vineyards, Il Verro is globally unique in crafting wine from this rediscovered ancient vine, reflecting a deep respect for terroir, tradition, and organic winemaking.
Since the time of the Borbone Royal family, the Monte Maggiore mountain, overlooking on one side the basin rich in mineral waters of Riardo town (the source of the world famous “Ferrarelle” mineral water) and on the other the Volturno Valley, was the boar hunting ground of the Barony of Formicola.
Farm’s name “Il Verro” comes from the name that the locals gave to the male boar ('u Verru). The story of this adventure is rooted in a friendship started back in the sixties, when, on the benches of the high school, five hopefuls teenagers met each other.
Like all long-standing friendships, it needed nourishment: now, what nourishes and makes a solid and irreplaceable human relationship, if not a shared interest?
Thus, a piece of land gently sloping, completely invaded by brambles and weeds, became the catalyst for the energies of now eager friends to return to the solid values of the oldest traditions of his native land, creating a venture ambitious: to produce high quality, native, in purity and natural wine and olive oil.
The winery produces about 30.000 bottles of wine per year from 3 native grape varieties: Casavecchia, Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero.
The grapes are produced from fully owned and native vineyards, characterized by rich lava soils, facing south-south-east where there are significant temperature changes between day and night; surrounding the Estate ancient olive trees, walnut and cherry.
Il Verro has rediscovered and begun the development of the ancient vine Coda di Pecora (Tail Sheep) in the past cultivated in the area between the Monte Maggiore and Roccamonfina. Frojo in 1875 mentions it in his work on viticulture in Campania.
Il Verro, actually, is the first and only one in the world to sell wine produced from this rare vine variety.
The development of old grapes and the production of fine natural organic certified wines that follow the traditions linked to the terroir is our philosophy.
