A Sicilian Gem of Tradition and Quality
About Le Casematte
Founded in 2008 by Gianfranco Sabbatino and Andrea Barzagni, Le Casematte is a distinguished winery located in the Faro region of Messina, Sicily. Spanning 11 hectares, the vineyards are nestled on the slopes of Faro, reaching elevations of up to 500 meters above sea level. This unique location offers breathtaking views of the sea and a perfect environment for grape cultivation.
Terroir of Le Casematte
The winery benefits from a unique microclimate created by the breezes from the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, which meet at the Strait of Messina. This climate results in significant temperature variations between day and night, even during the summer months, helping to protect the vines during the critical ripening phase. The volcanic soils, rich in black earth and lava sand from nearby Mount Etna, provide excellent drainage and fertility. Additionally, the coastal sandy soils, primarily composed of silica, enhance water retention, further supporting vine health.
Organic Farming Practices
Le Casematte is committed to organic farming, ensuring that their grapevines thrive without synthetic chemicals. The winery uses minimal oak barrels and new wood, allowing the wines to express the unique characteristics of their terroir. This dedication to quality has earned their wines numerous prestigious awards. Adopting a “small is beautiful” philosophy, Le Casematte produces a limited quantity of wines each year, allowing for meticulous attention to detail in every step of the winemaking process.
