A Scenic Winery Nestled in the Macedon Hills
History of Mount Macedon Winery
Mount Macedon Winery, perched at 680 meters above sea level, is one of Australia's highest wineries, offering stunning views of the Black Forest Valley. Originally known as "Geburrh," the name reflects the area's indigenous heritage. The land was first used for dairy farming and later transformed into a blueberry field before Don and Pam Ludby planted their first vines in 1989. In 2016, Dylan and Elisha Grimes took over, reopening the winery to visitors after years of closure, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty and flavors of this unique location.
The Terroir of Macedon Ranges
The Macedon Ranges wine region is celebrated for its cool climate and sandy soils, which are perfect for grape cultivation. The vineyards here thrive at altitudes between 300 and 800 meters (980 to 2,600 feet), where warm days are complemented by cooler nights. This climate, along with the region's higher rainfall compared to drier northern areas, allows many vineyards to grow grapes without irrigation, resulting in richer and more concentrated flavors. The clay-rich soils also play a vital role, retaining moisture while draining excess water, contributing to the exceptional quality of the wines produced in this area.
