Tenuta del Travale is a proud micro winery nestled in the stunning region of Calabria, Italy. Our vineyard has recently earned the prestigious designation of "heroic," reflecting the dedication and resilience of our team as we cultivate our grapes in challenging conditions.

Viticulture at Tenuta del Travale

At Tenuta del Travale, we practice manual viticulture on steep slopes, utilizing terraces and steps to nurture our vines. Our meticulous care for the land allows nature to flourish as the true queen of our vineyard. Situated at 520 meters above sea level in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sila, we cultivate just two hectares of Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio grapes. For us, small means beautiful, and we prioritize quality above all else. Under the expert guidance of oenologist Emiliano Falsini and agronomist Stefano Dini, our wines have received accolades from national and international wine guides. Notably, our Esmen tetra has been awarded three glasses by Gambero Rosso and the Gold Award from Winehunter, while Eleuteria has earned five Grappoli from Bibenda and was featured in Gambero Rosso's 'Rare Wines' section.

Philosophy of The Winery

Our wines are deeply connected to the cultural heritage of our region. Each label features a miniature of Abbot Gioacchino, a historical figure from our area. Every year, we include a Latin phrase on the label of Eleuteria, our flagship wine, reflecting our philosophy of life. The choice of our grape varieties may seem reminiscent of the famous Etna wines, but they are rooted in our local heritage, showcasing the indigenous grapes that flourished in northern Calabria. Our carefully crafted project has proven successful, as our grapes thrive in this unique habitat characterized by significant temperature variations, rocky terrain, and the cold winds of Sila that blanket our vineyards in winter snow. This nurturing environment rewards our passion and dedication to viticulture.

Excellent quality wines produced by a small company but with excellent growth prospects. The wines are niche, few bottles produced each year but with a very high quality, we briefly visited the vineyard from which the work and commitment behind the production can already be seen, then we continued in the cellar where the explanations are were precise and accurate, last but not least the tasting room where we had the opportunity to taste the three flagships of the company, one better than the other, certainly destined for haute cuisine and in fact already landed in several restaurants starred by the guide Michelin. I'm sure we'll soon hear about their wines within a few years. An experience that I highly recommend.

I had tasted their wines at a Roman event on southern wines in 2019 and I promised myself I would go and visit the estate because it was close to my house by the sea... I finally succeeded! Just outside Cosenza, Carlotta and Matilde welcomed us and guided us around the estate and illustrated all the details with professionalism and care: the place is beautiful, two differently exposed amphitheater vineyards flanked by woods and interspersed with splendid lavender plants that have attracted wonderful butterflies, everything is cared for by hand, with a deliberately low yield which already heralds the excellent result and the small but precious production. In the tasting room, spacious and carefully furnished, we are also welcomed by Nicola and Raffaella, the girls' parents and founders of the estate, who guide us in the tasting of three wines Eleuteria 2016, Eleuteria 2021 and Esmen 2021: the wines are extraordinary, they have a distinctive character and an exceptional balance, they are the perfect result of everything they have shown and told us! If you pass by, it's a winery not to be missed.

What a beautiful experience! Raffaella and her family have created an amazing vineyard that truly reflects all elements of this amazing location and which shine through in these superbly handcrafted, small batch wines. The care, attention to detail and gracious hospitality are beyond description and we wish to thank the family (and the 2 beautiful dogs) for hosting us today.
