All the Right Things at The Islander Estate Vineyards
Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third-largest island, is separated from the mainland by the Backstairs Passage, a 15km stretch of ocean. The Islander Estate Vineyards spans 280 hectares in the Kohinoor Hills, with 11 hectares dedicated to grape cultivation. Here, you’ll find a variety of grapes including Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Grenache, Viognier, and Semillon. The close planting of vines limits yield but enhances flavor concentration, while the cooling Southern Ocean breezes play a crucial role in the ripening process. This unique climate, characterized by sunny days and cool nights, allows for a slow ripening period that helps retain acidity in the grapes.
The winery features modern facilities equipped with imported French technology, including concrete open fermenters, large wooden vats, and smaller barriques for aging and blending. The winemaking team focuses on harnessing natural acids and tannins to create medium-bodied wines that showcase finesse and elegance. With its distinctive approach and commitment to quality, The Islander Estate Vineyards stands out as a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts and travelers alike.
