The Family winery of Vasari 1628
Producing a fine wine is an art, like all true art, it requires Experience, Ability and Passion. For hundreds of years, the Vasari family has cultivated vines on the hills dominating the valley of the river Mela in Santa Lucia del Mela and Merì, in Messina Province . The Vasari name represents over 400 years of Italian and, more specifically, Sicilian art, culture and history . Farming and viticulture have always been a tradition in the Vasari family. We produce Premium DOC organic wines as the Mamertino, historically one of the most ancient wine in the world still now produced, and also we produce superior quality cold-pressed olive oil.
Our farm was the first, 40 years ago, to rediscover the Mamertino wine. When you drink a glass of Mamertino DOC Vasari, you drink a sip of history, this is a wine that was recorded as far back as Roman times. There are copious records on Marmertino dating back to 289 BC. Mamertino wines were the favorite of Emperor Julius Caesar. It was offered by Julius Ceasar at banquets including the celebrations for his third consulship. Today these wines are classified by PAPILLON among the Top Hundred Italian wines 2013.
Wine Making at the heart of Sicliy
Vines were planted on the most fertile soils of the state facing north-west and west at an altitude of 250/300 meters. The planting density is 4000 vines per hectare. Due to the heavy pruning, the yield per hectare does not exceed 40/60 hectolitres of wine for both white and red wines. This low productivity per hectare ensures a wine of great quality. The organic wines – Mamertino DOC - are made exclusively from the finest indigenous Sicilian grapes: the white wines are made with Cataratto, Inzolia, and Grillo grapes; and the red wines are made with Nero d’Avola and Nocera grapes. Nocera a typical and exclusive vine variety cultivated only in the Messina area.
