Wines that Reflect Exceptional Terroirs of Malleco Valley in the Araucanía Region
Viña Capitan Pastene or VICAP was founded in 2017 by partners Raúl Narváez, an agronomist-enologist at the Catholic University of Chile, and Juan Pablo Lepín, a lawyer and entrepreneur. This business grew as a result of its desire to showcase the exceptional terroirs of the Malleco Valley through wine production. They wanted to produce small-batch wine so that they can ensure supreme quality at every step of the winemaking process. VICAP seeks to make a wine that is sustainable and vitalizes local farming in the Araucanía region.
The Malleco Valley Terroir
Malleco Valley is located in the central-southern region of Chile. The Malleco Valley has a terroir that produces high-quality wines with its own unique characteristics. This valley is known for the following:
- It produces wine from the arid climate of central Chile, which is perfect for making dry red wine.
- The soil composition of this area is made up of clay, sand, and gravel which makes it ideal for producing white wine.
- It has a Mediterranean climate with a long growing season, which allows the grapes to develop well without any need for irrigation or other external support during their growth cycle.
- The presence of volcanoes in this area helps to create intense heat and humidity
VICAP, A Social Project
The wine project intends to make wines with grapes from the native Araucanía region. Additionally, they want to include grapes from local small farms so they can support their businesses and help them thrive. They have used grapes from vineyards that were cultivated by inmates fulfilling sentences and seeking social reintegration through agricultural work.
