Fourth Generation of the Carcelén Family Runs the Winery
Establishing their presence in the region in the late 19th century, Asensio Carcelén Winery began with founder D. Asensio Carcelén Herrero. Later, his son, D. Juan Carcelén Herrero, created a substantial economic and industrial expansion for the family business. The simple innovation of bottling the wines made their wines more accessible in several new markets. Subsequently, his successor D. Asensio Carcelén Cutillas, acquired the winery and made it one of the most famous winemaking companies worldwide. Today, the fourth generation of the Carcelén Family handles the winery under the ownership of Juan Carcelén Gilar.
300 Hectares Dedicated to Syrah, Garnacha Tinta, and Monastrell
Owning a total area of 300 hectares, the owner of Asensio Carcelén grows three main varieties of wines, Monastrell being the queen of the vineyards. In addition to Monastrell, Juan cultivates Syrah and Garnacha Tinta. The estate is a certified producer of red wines, made within the Jumilla D.O. region. The harvest is done manually, and selective bunches are carefull transported to the renovated wine cellar for fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
In 2006, to increase productivity and quality, the estate was relocated closer to the vineyards. Juan, the owner, and enologist of Asensio Carcelén, introduced new technology and quality control measures in the cellar, respecting the family traditions, Mother Nature, and biodiversity to create superb Spanish wines.
