Schmitt Winery: A Gem in Franconia

Weingut Schmitt is a family-owned winery nestled in the picturesque region of Franconia, Germany. Surrounded by lush fields and rugged vineyards in Bergtheim, this winery is celebrated for its production of Federweißer, a sweet and light new wine, as well as Glühwein, a traditional mulled wine. Visitors can enjoy the stunning natural beauty while savoring aromatic wines crafted with care.

A True Family Legacy

The Schmitt family's winemaking tradition began in the mid-1940s when Ernst Schmitt dedicated part of his land to grape cultivation. In 1974, Manfred and Helene Schmitt expanded the family business by acquiring a property in Bergtheim. Today, Anja and Frank Schmitt continue this legacy, passionately upholding the family’s commitment to quality winemaking, which is evident in the exceptional wines produced in their cellar.

Dedicated Winemaking with Nature in Mind

Managing 30 hectares of vineyards across the prime regions of Bergtheim, Thüngersheim, Retzbach, Güntersleben, and Handthal, Anja and Frank cultivate a diverse range of grapes, including Silvaner, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc. Their commitment to eco-friendly viticulture practices ensures the preservation of local flora and fauna.

Schmitt Winery offers a delightful selection of red, white, and rosé wines, along with high-quality sparkling and dessert wines. These wines are aged in French oak barrels, enhancing their flavor and complexity. Anja and Frank's meticulous attention to detail throughout the winemaking process has earned the winery an EcoStep Wine certificate, recognizing their commitment to quality, environmental sustainability, and food safety.

Friendly owners, wine tasting possible until 6 p.m. Unfortunately, we only got a parking space at the front, facing the road. Due to the rainy weather, there was only mud in front of the entrance to the motorhome. Unfortunately, the road was also clearly audible. There is a restroom with a toilet and shower. Unfortunately, it wasn't as clean as one would hope during my visit, but it always depends on the individual visitors.

We stayed for one night. Very nice spot near a winery. Clean and spacious spots, super friendly staff and last but not least chilled and very tasteful wine.

We think the mulled wine is worth the money! We really like it! It's very digestible and you still have a clear head the next day 😉 Whether white or red 😁 brilliant. The apple punch is also very tasty and a lot of fun to drink.

What a great place! We found the winery through Landfreuden, but due to our plans we couldn't stay there and “only” buy wine and Federweißer. After extensive and charming advice, we picked up a lot. But we would love to come back to stay overnight! Promised!

The parking space at the winery is great: easy to reach with a trailer, easy to get to from the A7 and well equipped. The sanitary facilities (toilets, showers, washing up facilities) are good and clean. There is an emergency refrigerator for those arriving outside opening hours. This also seems possible without any problems. There are around 30 spaces for campers, vans, caravans or motorhomes. Supermarket (walking distance) and gas stations are also available in town. We were warmly welcomed, were able to taste wine at short notice and took some with us. We will definitely come back - for the wine and the overnight accommodation.

Stayed for 2 nights. 2 adults and 1 child 11 years old. Paid 23 EUR per night including electricity. Shower 1 EUR for 2,5 minute. Very friendly people and very clean, and they sell own produced wine, which we of course tried and liked. 2 minutes by bike to a Edeka bakery and shopping. We went to Würzburg for 1 day - beautiful old town - so nice. We liked it very much.

Very nice parking space with great sanitary facilities. We were given a very friendly welcome, were able to try the delicious wines and even bought a few bottles. The cycle paths could be better signposted, but that's not the winery's fault. If we're ever in the area again, we'll definitely come back. Thank you 🤩
