Schmitt winery: in the heart of Franconia

A private winery, surrounded by magnificent and rugged vineyards of Bergheim, Schmitt is located in the beautiful Franconia region of Germany. The winery is a renowned producer of Federweißer (new, sweet, light wine) and Glühwein, a mulled wine, made under the Qualitätswein Franken label. It is a perfect place for those who are willing to let themselves be charmed by natural beauty and aromatic wines.

A real family business

It was the mid-40s when Ernst Schmitt acquired one-third of land from his parents, which he dedicated to grape cultivation, along with orchards and livestock farming. Later in 1974, Manfred and Helene Schmitt bought a property in Bergheim and expanded the family business. Today, Anja and Frank, following the footsteps of their ancestors, handle the family tradition of winemaking with great passion and commitment, which can be seen in the gems they produce in the cellar.

Winemaking with great dedication and respect of nature

The duo manages 30 hectares of vineyards in the most prominent regions of Bergtheim, Thüngersheim, Retzbach, Güntersleben and Handthal. Here, they cultivate a variety of grapes, including Silvaner, Bacchus, and Müller-Thurgau, along with top-quality Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc. Natural and eco-friendly viticulture practices help the owners to maintain natural flora and fauna.

Some of the best wines that Schmitt Winery delivers are delicious red, white, and rose wines. Nonetheless, attention is also given to rich-quality sparkling and dessert wines. These wines are stored in wooden barrels, made from French oak, for efficient ageing and fining.

Anja and Frank pay attention to small details throughout the wine production phases. Their hard work and dilligence pays itself off and it's wonderful to see it get recognized. For example, the winery received an EcoStep Wine certificate stating that certain standards for our management are met in quality, environment, safety and health in the work space, foodsafety, and sustainability.

Weingut Schmitt Bergtheim

We stopped at the Weingut Schmitt Bergtheim because we were curious about wines from the Franconian area. So we chose to stop at Weingut Schmitt. They were in the middle of the wine harvest but still took time to show us around. We met an incredibly knowledgeable nice girl who know a lot about the different wines we tasted. She also told us a bit of the history of the winery. We got a tour where we got to see a bit how they produced the wine. And we will certainly make further visits.
