Zagreus Winery: A Legacy Since 1998

Founded in the autumn of 1998, Zagreus Winery spans 120 hectares of lush vineyards in the Plovdiv Plain, a prime winegrowing region in Bulgaria's Upper Thracian Valley. Here, grape varieties such as Mavrud, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot thrive under ideal climatic conditions, allowing them to ripen beautifully by July. This environment is crucial for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

In 2013, Zagreus Winery proudly became a certified organic wine producer after a rigorous three-year transition.

Organic Practices for Quality Wines

Since 2010, Zagreus Winery has adhered to European Union standards for organic wine production. The winery avoids synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms, ensuring that every grape is cultivated naturally. This commitment to organic farming not only enhances the quality of the wine but also promotes sustainability in the vineyard.

Winemaking Philosophy

Zagreus Winery is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that manage the entire winemaking process, from grape harvesting to bottling. The winery emphasizes that the quality of wine is influenced by both the vineyard's conditions and the winemakers' intentions. Their philosophy centers on nurturing the best grapes in a sustainable manner, ensuring that each bottle reflects their dedication to quality and environmental stewardship.

Great winery. Very committed to indigenous Bulgarian varieties. The Mavrud in particular is great. I haven't tried all the wines I brought with me yet, but the reserve and the two "handmades" are very good. Very friendly staff there, English speaking. Be sure to stop by if you're in the Plovdiv area!

We had a wonderful wine tasting experience at the Zagreus Winery. The tour and tasting was very interesting, held in perfect English (or French) by Grozdena, with a special focus on Bulgarian organic wine from ancient grape varieties. We definitely recommend it and will come back again!

Definitely one of our greatest experiences during our trip to Bulgaria in 2024. The winery is easily accessible, close to the main road, you can park easily close to the entrance. The wine tour started with an overview of the winery, the history of Bulgarian winemaking and a visit to their production and storage premises. However, the best part was our wine guide who besides entertaining visitors has been involved in winemaking. Huge thanks to Grozdena for making our visit so delightful. The wine produced at Zagreus Winery is really good, so we used the opportunity to buy some from the producer and take home. The wine tasting was in an excellent atmosphere as it is presented at major countries producing high-quality wine. It was supplemented by locally produced tasty snacks. To sum up our experience – the visit to Zagreus Winery really made our day!

Thank you so much, Grozdena! The tour was absolutely fantastic, and it was a true pleasure sharing both the wine and the wonderful discussions about it with you. We learned so much from your expertise, and your passion made the experience unforgettable. If anyone is looking for a memorable winery visit, I can't recommend this place enough—it’s a must-see for wine lovers!

An interesting modern winery that produces varied and very good wines, albeit somewhat high in alcohol. Noteworthy are the Reserva Mavrud, a 14-percent full-bodied red, and the Tiara White Bio, a smooth, fruity white.

We had an amazing experience at the winery! Not only the wines were great, but the staff were extremely kind and nice people who would spend time to take you to the process of making wine, share the love for the wine and have a friendly chat about anything really. The views are astonishing as well.
