Smiley Tours

Hello, my name is Ivo and I am the owner of a small family company called Smiley Tours that organizes wine-tasting tours in Croatia in area around city Dubrovnik. Tours that I organize to visit the most southern regions in Croatia called Konavle valley and the peninsula of Pelješac famous Croatian wine region.

The location of Dubrovnik is close to two wine regions where we drive our guests. The first wine region is called Konavle valley which is one of the northeastern and western vineyards of the region, also has the appropriate production of quality and autochthonous wines. In addition to world-famous species such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon, numerous local and indigenous species are grown such as su plavac mali, vranac, kadarun, dalmatinka, and others. Among them, a special place belongs to the autochthonous domestic variety Malvasia Dubrovačka bijela and Maraština which are almost destroyed and whose conservation restoration attaches special importance. Numerous Konavli wineries, following world trends, produce authentic wines that are very much in line with local gastronomic specialties.

The second is called Penninsula Pelješac famous for its premium red wines Dingac and Postup from an autochthonous variety of grape Plavac Mali, beautiful landscapes, and unique handmade vineyards. Peljesac Peninsula is a relaxing and refreshing place known as Peljesac Paradise. Perfect for a quick escape from the city crowd only one hour drive from Dubrovnik. The wineries that we choose to visit are small and big-size family-owned wineries that make premium wines. Often wineries will be presented by actual owners and winemakers. Wine in Croatia always goes with food so on our tastings at wineries you will get bits of bread, olive oil, or cheese.

Wines of the Dubrovnik Area mark the entire Mediterranean civilization. In ancient times, the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans cultivated the grape. From then on grapevine has been cultivated and wine has been produced continuously. Numerous amphorae discovered on our seabed testify to the way of storing and transporting wine, oil, and other liquids. At the time of the Dubrovnik Republic, two major wine varieties included white wine (Vinum album) and red wine (Vinum vermelum), as well as vinum purum (pure wine is not a wine variety, but the wine which is not mixed and includes no additives). According to the Dubrovnik Republic Archives, 27 wine cellars and taverns were supported by the state.

The total vineyard area in Croatia is about 132 thousand hectares, and the two major wine regions are the continental and coastal wine regions. White wines prevail in the continental part of Croatia, while red wines are predominant on the coast. Out of 1200 world-known grape varieties, one hundred are grown in Croatia, the majority of which are indigenous.
