Orta Nova is about 25.4 kilometers from Foggia, in the region of Puglia, in southern Italy. It stretches to the southern part of the Tavoliere on the right bank of the River Carapelle.
History of Orta Nova Wine
The DOC Orta Nova is named after the ancient port city of Orta Nova, located 25km inland before the shoreline reaches Tuscany. The word "Orta" means garden, according to the most common theories. It has a city surrounded on all sides by kilometers of well-maintained olive trees, vineyards and fields dedicated to agriculture or fruit and vegetables.
In 1808, Orta became an independent town with Ordona and Carapelle. After Italy's unification in 1863, she received the name of Nova to distinguish herself from two similarly-named towns in Italy Orta San Giulio and Orta di Atella.
Terrior of Orta Nova
Vineyards ofof Orta Nova DOC are planted in limestone soil with some sand, and a small percentage of ash from nearby volcanoes. In Orta Nova, summers are typically short, but hot and mostly clear. The winters are long and cold with a lot of wind. The average temperature ranges from 3.3°C to 32.7°C and is rarely below -1°C or above 37.2°C over the course of the year.
A lot of successful wineries are located in this region due to its rich soil and optimal climate for grape-growing.
Orta Nova Wine Characteristics
Orta Nova wines come in both red and rosé, with rosé wine being the most popular form of vinous production in Puglia. Red Orta DOC is dry, medium alcohol wine and has a full-body with tannic acidity that brings to mind earthy and hearty dishes. This wine would go well with Mediterranean dishes, soups stewed in tomato, peppers and spices. Orta Nova PDO Rosé presents a light, Mediterranean style. It has a red-colored wine appearance with a delicate aroma that is slightly vinous and fresh tasting. Fish, oysters and other seafood are good pairings when it's young. Alcohol content for this wine is 11.5%.
The grape varieties in the Orta Nova wine region are common varieties: Sangiovese, Uva di Troia, Montepulciano, Lambrusco Maestri and Trebbiano Toscano. It is important to note that sangiovese, the type of grape variety that is most widely planted in Italy, is at the core of these wines.
