History of Pla i Llevant Wine Region

The grape growing and wine production was introduced to the Pla i Llevant island by the ancient Romans in the year 121 BC when Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius took possession of the island for Rome. Pliny the Elder mentioned Majorca wines in his writings.

In 1991, the Spanish wine Vinos de la Tierra was appropriately classified as a DO zone. In 2001, the zone was upgraded again to a PDO zone. Despite prohibitions from the Koran, grape-growing and wine-production did not stop during the Moorish period and remained strong. And when King Jaufer of Aragon conquered Mallorca in 1230, he was offered top quality wine as a show of peace.

There were over 27,000 hectares of grapevines in Majorca before the arrival of the phylloxera plague. When this happened wine exports dramatically plunged to just 300,000 hl (8 million gallons) per year. Nonetheless, the late 20th century saw a resurgence in wine production because travelers spent a lot of money on quality vino.

Pla i Llevant Wine Characteristics

1. White wine

White wines are rather pale wines with light green hues and intense, somewhat fruity aromas. The unique flavors of the foreign varieties grown in our lands bring about a number of sensations: Chardonnay and Muscat produce wine that is highly expressive in the nose and pleasing in the mouth. When you take in the taste of a citrusy sweet wine, it can make your nose feel tingly and flavory.

2. Rose wine

Rosé wines are always beautifully balanced and defined with notes of red berry flavours and crisp citrus fruit. The wide range of textures and flavours make it a perfect wine to enjoy all year round. The wine's aroma is a distinctive orange citrus character that also carries hints of grapefruit. It is similar to that of rosé wines made with the Callet variety.

3. Sparkling wine

Sparkling wines are becoming ever more popular in the Pla i Llevant Mallorca PDO region. And wineries from all over have been creating new styles of these delightful drinks every year. There are sparkling whites and rosés made for both natives and wild varieties too! Light wines such as a red with a fine and persistent mousse and dominant fruit aromas, like that of pastries, bread dough and yeast.

Food to pair with Pla i Llevant Wine

Pa amb oli

In Spanish, pa amb oli is a dish native to the islands of Mallorca and the Balearic region. This food is made with peasant bread or dark rye bread, fresh tomatoes, olive oil and salt. Slices of bread are dipped into tomatoes before they're cut and delivered to your dish, giving them a nice rosy color.

Olive oil is drizzled on top, and sea salt flakes are then sprinkled over the bread. The native Mallorcan ramellet tomato variety is preferred, while the bread should ideally be of the pan payés variety. The olive oil and sea salt should already be in a food processor when adding to the pan or griddle surface to mix thoroughly into it.

There are many variations of the classic pa amb oli, with some recipes incorporating garlic, local cheddar cheese and sausages. In addition to that, there are also some recipes that omit chilled meats in favor of using a generic filling like cold cuts. Pla ia Levin wines are great for pairing with Pa amb oli.

Greixonera de brossat

Greixonera cheese cake is made with sugar, eggs, cinnamon, lemon zest and brossat - fresh cow's milk cottage cheese. Ricotta would also work just fine.

The ingredients are mixed until they're creamy and then poured into a baking dish, which is then baked till it's firm. Greixonerias de Brossat are served chilled, ideally dusted with some confectioners' sugar and cinnamon. They're called greixonerias because of the clay dish in which they're baked in!

This traditional cheesecake recipe was traditionally good for Easter, but now it can be found throughout the year in the Pla i Llevant. Plinia Levin sparkling wines are great for pairing with Greixonera de brossat!
