Where is the Riverina wine region?
The Riverina wine region, located in south central New South Wales, is concentrated around the rural city of Griffith. The region has long been known as a workhorse of Australian wine production. Albury and Wodonga are to the southeast, Swan Hill to the west, and Mildura to the northwest. The Murrumbidgee River runs horizontally across the center of the region, while the Murray River runs south from Swan Hill to Albury. The Riverina wine zone includes the Riverina wine area. It is one of the significant wine regions in Australia producing over 108 million liters of wine annually.
History of the Riverina wine region
The Riverina wine region is one of Australia's oldest and largest wine regions. The Riverina wine region's history can be traced back to 1836 when a group of German and French settlers began planting grapes. For starters, the site was unsuitable for grape cultivation, and they were unable to earn a profit. They persisted, though, and eventually made a profit when they sold their wines as far away as London, England. German settlers looking for fresh prospects created the first commercial vineyard in 1837. They grew vines along the Murrumbidgee River, which runs through Wagga Wagga and New South Wales. The McWilliams family was credited for the development of the vineyards that produced fortified wines during the early 20th century.
The terroir and geography of the Riverina wine region
This region has a Mediterranean-like climate, with hot summers and cool winters. It receives a lot of rain and has a dry winter season with little humidity. This region's soil type is sandy loam, which has a red-brown color and a texture between sand and clay. The Riverina wine region's natural resources are restricted, with huge amounts of red gum forest, pasture, and river valleys. The soil is mostly deposited by the ancient streams upon the remnants of the Great dividing range. The alluvial soils with a mixture of sand and gravel respond well to the vines. Vineyards are spread across over 20,000 hectares with less density than neighboring wine regions. The climate in the region is typically humid continental, with warm summers and chilly winters. The region's average annual rainfall ranges from 650 mm to 1,000 mm.
Popular grape varieties from the Riverina wine region
The region is known to produce several varieties of wines from a wide range of grapes. The winemakers are courageous to try out interesting and new varieties as well. Cabernet Sauvignon is the major grape variety in the Riverina wine region. Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are among the grape varietals planted here. Other grape varieties grown in the region include Grenache, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo. Several Australian native grape types, including Black Muscat, Muller Thurgau, and Riesling, grow in the Riverina.
Food to pair with Riverina wine
Fritz and Sauce
Fritz and sauce is a classic Australian sandwich. It consists of two slices of bread, some tomato sauce, and a fritz. Fritz is a type of cheap sausage meat that seems to be made with beef, lamb, and pork trimmings.
First, the bread is buttered and then the fritz slice is put on. Once that, tomato sauce is put over it, and finally, the second slice of bread is to complete it. It pairs well with Riverina wines.
Cruffin
That's right, a croissant/muffin crossbreed called a Cruffin. You can use it as a sandwich or fill it with any of the items on this list - pastry cream, peanuts, strawberries, etc.
This treat is relatively new - it's believed that the first one was made in 2013 by LA-based baker Kate Reid of Lune Croissanterie. It got a lot of attention in Australia and subsequently became popularized by SF's Holmes Bakehouse. Cruffin pairs are amazing with Riverina dessert wines.
Hamdog
Hamdog is an unconventional hybrid that was created in Western Australia. In 2004, Mark Murray invented this hamburger/ hot dog hybrid. It consists of a specially shaped bun that has a beef patty cut in half and it is then placed together with our frankfurter sausage to make the perfect fusion of a burger and a hot dog.
A ham dog is a hot dog with an added ham, traditionally topped with ingredients such as pickles, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and sauces. They're sold at fast food places as well as sporting occasions and events like community markets.
