As part of this process, although the local grape varietals are still the stronghold of the area, international varietals such as Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are now also being cultivated.

The climate of the Croatian Uplands wine region is mild continental. The influences on the climate are the cold are from the Alps in the North and the hot are from the Mediterranean in the South. Although dominated by white varietals there are also areas in the Croatian Uplands wine region where the growth of red varietals such as Pinot Noir has seen significant growth in recent times.

The winemakers of the Croatian Uplands wine region use a variety of wine-making methods ranging from traditional and conventional approaches to increasingly popular approaches such as biodynamics. In terms of wine production, there are no wineries in the Croatian Uplands wine region that have high production levels as most are small and family-owned. Historically, some of the best wines have been made in small vineyards and in the basements of local homes.

Trakoscan Forest Park and Castle are one of the most beautiful and romantic places to visit in all of Croatia. This castle and park are located in Hrvatskao and have a history that dates back over 800 years. The castle was previously a small lookout fort as part of the Croatian defence system but was developed into a magnificent castle by Count Draskovic in the 19th century. Trakoscan Forest Park and Castle is a Croatian cultural and historic monument of significance and is home to a museum that showcases a valuable collection of paintings, weapons, and furniture from the Renaissance until Historicism. When visiting the site, visitors are encouraged to take the 5km long educational path with 20 educational stops and which takes 2 hours to walk. There are many places to stop and relax along the way to enjoy the natural beauty and calm of the park.

Kumrovec - Experience Traditional Croatian Village

Kumrovec is a traditional folk village situated in the Croatian Uplands wine region close to the Slovenian border. This village has the traditional architecture and feel of a village from the early 20th century and transports visitors into the history of the region. Kumrovec is best known for being the birthplace of the Croatian statesman Josip Broz Tito. Inside the village of Kumrovec, there are approximately 40 reconstructed facilities as well as a museum that houses various valuable objects and crafts. The dough is then rolled up using a tablecloth and the rolls are cut into thinner strips. The filled strips are cooked in hot water. Strukli is traditionally served topped with butter and breadcrumbs as a starter or a main course. The filling can also be changed to convert them into a dessert dish. This dish is considered a national dish of Croatia and can be found on the menus of most restaurants across the country.

Krpice s domaćom šunkom is a traditional baked Croatian casserole that is true comfort food at its best. This dish consists of krpics which is Croatian pasta, chopped ham, oils, onion, salt and pepper. These ingredients are combined and placed in a casserole dish and then topped with a mixture of milk, cream, eggs and nutmeg. The dish is then baked in the oven until it becomes golden brown in colour. Krpice s domaćom šunkom can be made even richer by adding bacon and pairs best with a crisp glass of local white wine.

Varaždinski klipič are long bread rolls that are traditionally made in the city of Varazdin in the Croatian Uplands. The history of these bread rolls dates back to the 18th century when Varazdin was the capital of Croatia. Varaždinski klipič is made using flour, oil, milk, yeast, salt, and sugar. Each bread roll should be 23 cm long with four visible folds. Before they are baked, the dough is painted with egg yolk and sprinkled with cumin and sesame or pumpkin seeds. The flavour of Varaždinski klipič is milky, with slightly sour hints. These rolls can be bought at most bakers in Varazdin and are usually enjoyed with a morning coffee.
