A Legacy of Winemaking in Catalonia Since the 17th Century
Origin of Parató Winery
Celler Parató traces its origins back to the 17th century in the vibrant neighborhood of Sants, Barcelona. The Elias family began cultivating vineyards on the slopes of Montjuïc and in the fertile plains of “La Marina de Sants.” They operated a home press, producing wine sold by the liter to local residents. Unfortunately, the Spanish Civil War disrupted this cherished family tradition.
The Penedès Region
The Alt Penedès region, known for its sunny summers and mild winters, provides an ideal climate for grape cultivation. This area, sheltered by the Montserrat mountain, has a rich history of viticulture, with evidence of Phoenician and Roman vineyards found in archaeological sites. The soil here is primarily calcareous clay, with some plots featuring sandstone. While organic matter is limited, the unique characteristics of each vineyard plot are shaped by its topography and orientation.
The Present of Parató
In 1975, Josep Elias Andreu, the heir to the family estate, revived the winemaking legacy by founding Parató Vinícola. He expanded the family’s holdings to 94 hectares in the heart of Alt Penedès and constructed the current winery in 1977. Today, the four siblings—Josep, Montse, Esther, and Jordi Elias Terns—continue the family tradition, committed to producing high-quality wine and cava exclusively from their own grapes, honoring the principles that have guided their family for generations.
