A Historic Winery by the Sea in Languedoc-Roussillon
Terroir of Château le Bouis Vineyards
Château le Bouis boasts a 35-acre vineyard located in the unique terroir of La Clape, near Gruissan in the Aude region. Once a small island during Gallo-Roman times, La Clape now features diverse soils, primarily clay-limestone, shaped by various geological formations. The estate benefits from 13 winds that sweep through the area, ensuring the south-facing vineyards receive abundant sunshine and experience less than 500 mm of annual rainfall. This distinctive climate contributes to the production of high-quality wines.
A Rich History at Château le Bouis
La Clape's winemaking history dates back to the Gallo-Roman period when the Romans began cultivating vines after their conquest in 118 BC. Over time, alluvial sediments connected the island to the mainland. In 1771, brothers Pierre-Jean and Dominique Bouis acquired the estate, which was initially multi-agricultural but gradually shifted focus to viticulture. The estate's name became synonymous with wine in the 19th century as the vineyard flourished.
Scenic Beauty of Château le Bouis
Château le Bouis invites visitors to enjoy a serene escape at the foot of the Massif de La Clape. Upon arrival, the stunning views of the Mediterranean, surrounded by pine trees and vineyards, create a vacation-like atmosphere. The fragrant aroma of rosemary fills the air, offering a true taste of the South of France.
